Minutewomen end 13-game slide against Rams with first win since Feb. 6, 2010
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball rallied in exciting fashion to deliver a 61-56 win over Fordham on Sunday at the Mullins Center. The Minutewomen, who ended a 13-game skid against Fordham, pick up their first victory over their A-10 foe since Feb. 6, 2010.
Massachusetts is now 8-2 overall, reaching that mark for the first time since 2006-07, and improves to 4-1 in the Atlantic 10. Fordham had a four-game winning streak snapped and falls to 6-3 (3-2 A-10).
Â
Sam Breen had her fifth double-double in the last six games, logging a team-high 19 points and 10 rebounds, including 17 points and six boards during the second half comeback effort. Ber'Nyah Mayo (11) scored double figures for the third time in the last four contests and Makennah White had 11 of her own, one short of a career-high. Mayo and White each pulled down six boards in the win and Destiney Philoxy handed out six assists.
Â
Fordham shot lights out off the opening tip, beginning the day 5-of-8 from the field and 3-of-4 from three-point land. UMass did hold Fordham to just 1-of-7 the final 3:23, but at the other end the Minutewomen were quiet in the final 1:52 and trailed, 18-11, after one period. Mayo paced the squad with five points and also added a block, as did Maeve Donnelly (2).
Â
After facing a 31-24 halftime deficit, Massachusetts came out firing in the third quarter and built an 8-0 run, taking their first lead since the opening minutes of the contest. Aided by a lockdown defensive effort, the squad shut down Fordham and kept the Rams to 2-of-17 in the period, plus five turnovers.
Â
Breen and White spearheaded a run that grew to 20-4 as the game turned for home, but even so the game remained within two possessions most of the fourth quarter. Mayo pushed the lead to a game-high 11 points in the final two minutes, and with the Minutewomen in the bonus the squad was able to close out the victory in part from the free throw line.
Â
The Minutewomen now turn their attention to a weekend trip to Richmond, Virginia, beginning with a 6 p.m. on Fri., Jan. 15 at VCU.
