THE OPENING TIP: THE MASSACHUSETTS-VCU PREVIEW
• Fresh off a three-game home stand, the UMass women's basketball team begins a four-game road trip with Atlantic 10 rival VCU on Fri., Jan. 15 in a 6 p.m. game from the Siegel Center. The highly-anticipated matchup pits two of the top three teams in the league standings against one another, with VCU tied with Dayton for the league lead and the Minutewomen close behind in third place.
• Friday's game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with Jeff Milby (PxP) and Demetrius Means (color) on the call.
• UMass was last in action on Sun., Jan. 10 and orchestrated an entertaining second half comeback to defeat Fordham, 61-56. The Minutewomen trailed by as much as 12 before chipping away down the stretch of the contest. Senior Sam Breen had 17 of her 19 points in the second half, finishing with her second double-double (10 reb) of the week. Breen was ultimately was named A-10 Player of the Week for the second consecutive week.
• It was a standout game for freshmen Ber'Nyah Mayo and Makennah White, who were also instrumental in the rally effort. Both rookies contributed 11 points, and Mayo pulled down six rebounds as well. Junior Destiney Philoxy had a line of seven points, five rebounds and six assists.
• Philoxy has been added to the team's leadership group as a captain, announced this week by head coach Tory Verdi. The Queens, N.Y. native will hold the role alongside Breen and graduate student Maddie Sims.
• Philoxy continues to position herself as one of the nation's leading ball distributors. Philoxy (8 apg) ranks second in Division I in assists per game and has contributed eight or more dimes in seven games this season. In total assists (80), she leads the country through games of Wed., Jan. 13.
• The Minutewomen wrap up their weekend on Sun., Jan. 15, taking on Richmond at 1 p.m. in a nationally-televised contest on CBS Sports Network.
