UMass alumnus led league in save percentage during 2020 season

AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse alumnus Sean Sconone '19 won the Major League Lacrosse Goalie of the Year Award for the second consecutive season, as announced by the MLL on Friday. Sconone previously won MLL Goalie of the Year during his rookie campaign in 2019 after he took home the Ensign C. Markland Jr. Kelly Award as the top goalie in NCAA men's lacrosse during his senior year in 2018.

Sconone, the Connecticut Hammerheads captain during the team's first year of competition, led MLL in save percentage (.571), posted an 11.40 goals-against average and made 76 stops during the 2020 season, in which he led Connecticut to the MLL playoffs. In addition to his goalie numbers, Sconone scooped up 23 groundballs and caused four turnovers.

Sconone is the sixth multiple-time winner of the award in MLL history, joining Greg Cattrano ('01, '02, '04), Brian Dougherty ('03, '06, '07) Jesse Schwartzman ('09, '13), Drew Adams ('11, '12) and John Galloway ('16, '18). Of the previous five winners, Sconone joins Cattrano as the only goalies to win the award in their first two years in the league.

The East Islip, New York, native dominated during his senior season with a .615 save percentage and ranked third in Division I with a 8.61 goals against average. He went undrafted in the 2019 MLL Collegiate Draft and was picked up by the Dallas Rattlers in June, 2019, where he immediately impacted the success of the team, earning him the 2019 Goalie of the Year award.
