March 10, 2020 | Men's Lacrosse

Three Minutemen produce five points each, Hochman wins 17 faceoffs

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse rallied back from a three-goal deficit and secured a 14-10 victory over LIU at Garber Field on Saturday afternoon. The win improved UMass to 5-2 overall and extended the team's current win streak to four games. LIU fell to 1-6 with the loss.

Senior midfielder Jeff Trainor, junior attack Chris Connolly and junior midfielder Kevin Tobin each posted five points on the day. Trainor did so on four goals and an assist while Connolly and Tobin tallied their five point outings via two goals and three assists apiece.

Sophomore attack Gabriel Procyk netted two goals and dished out an assist for a three-point outing. Five additional Minutemen had one point each with goals by Matt Caddigan, Billy Philpott and Devin Spencer, and assists from Scott Del Zotto and Charlie O'Brien.

Freshman Zack Hochman won 17 of the 28 faceoffs (.607) and grabbed nine groundballs, while he also caused one turnover.

Sophomore close defenseman Adam Towey scooped up four groundballs, second on the team only to Hochman's total. Trainor recorded three caused turnovers while Procyk added two.

Massachusetts put in the opening four goals of the game a cruised to a 4-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Procyk found the net twice in the run for his team-leading 14th and 15th goals of the year, and had a hand in another tally as well.

After Sean Boll connected for LIU with five minutes, 10 seconds to go in the first, the Sharks found their offensive groove and put in eight of the next 10 goals stretching more than 30 minutes of game clock. Will Snelders gave the Sharks their largest lead of contest with the final of those eight tallies as LIU held a 9-6 margin over UMass with 8:39 to go in the third.

The Maroon and White put in the final two goals of the third quarter though as UMass cut back within 9-8 entering the fourth. Spencer's turnaround jumpshot with 5:52 to go made it a 9-7 game before Connolly snuck around the left post from his spot at X and scored at the crease only 72 seconds later.

Jake Gillis doubles the LIU lead early in the fourth, but Massachusetts tallied the game's final six goals for the win. Trainor led the comeback effort with three goals in the quarter.

Trainor scored back-to-back with 12:10 and 10:52 left and evened it at 10-apiece. Caddigan followed with his first collegiate goal as the rookie midfielder scooped up a loose ball near the crease, soaked a cross-check by an LIU defenseman and fired an around-the-world goal over his left shoulder and inside the right post at the 9-minute mark.

UMass reached the final score as Trainor, Connolly and Philpott converted in succession over the final nine minutes.

Nick Grassa (two goals, two assists) and Richie LaCalandra (one goal, three assists) led LIU with four points apiece. Snelders added three points on two goals and an assist. Will Mark made 18 saves in the cage for the Sharks.
