Men's Lacrosse Continues Homestand With Albany On Tuesday

Minutemen host the Great Danes on Garber Field at 3 p.m.
GAMEDAY PARKING NOTICE: The majority of Lot 42, located Southwest of Garber Field & directly South of Boyden Gym, is by-permit parking from 7 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday. Any guests who park in Lot 42 are subject to standard UMass Transportation Services ticketing and towing on Tues., March 3. Those planning on attending the Tues., March 3 men's lacrosse game against Albany should only park at available metered spots ($1.50/hour; 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.) or in the Campus Center Parking Garage ($1.75/hour; 24/7). There is a limited number of metered spaces in Lot 42 and Lot 71, with extended metered parking available along the Haigis Mall and in the UMass Visitors Center. Please reference the UMass Transportation Services website for more information, including an interactive campus parking map.

Massachusetts Defeats No. 1 Yale
- UMass men's lacrosse defeated No. 1 nationally-ranked Yale at Garber Field, 13-10, on Sat., Feb. 29
- It marked the first win over the top-ranked team in the nation in program history
- The Minutemen raced to a 11-2 halftime lead as the team scored on all but two of its on-target attempts in the first half
- Redshirt senior midfielder Billy Philpott led the way with career highs of five points and four goals
- Freshman goalie Matt Knote made 12 saves in the win, including stops on Yale's final five on-target attempts to preserve the win
- It is the team's second top-15 victory of the season as UMass downed No. 12 Ohio State on the road on Feb. 15
Call It A Comeback
- Trailing by two headed into the fourth quarter, UMass fought back for a 9-7 victory at No. 12 Ohio State on Sat., Feb. 15. In the win, the Minutemen scored the final five goals and held Ohio State scoreless for the final 17 minutes.
- Sophomore attack Gabriel Procyk and senior midfielder Jeff Trainor each had two goals during the span, while junior midfielder Kevin Tobin added one. Trainor also had an assist during the scoring streak, as did junior attack Chris Connolly.
- Ohio State committed six turnovers in the final 17 minutes, while the UMass defense limited the Buckeyes to only five total shots (two on-target).
The Rarity Of A Rookie Between The Pipes
- UMass started true-freshman goalie Matt Knote in the cage during the opening five games of the season.
- He is the first true-freshman goalie to start the season-opening games since current associate head coach Doc Schneider did so in 2006.
- Knote totaled 292:38 in the cage over his five starts. He posted a 10.46 goals-against average and .523 save percentage in that span.
Jumping Into The Thick Of It
- University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse began the 2020 season with consecutive games against ranked opponents in No. 16 Army West Point on Feb. 8 and No. 12 Ohio State on Feb. 15. Both were road contests.
- The last time UMass opened the year with back-to-back games against ranked opposition was 2015, when the Minutemen lost to a No. 20-ranked Army West Point squad, 12-7, and a No. 6-ranked North Carolina team, 20-8.
- Massachusetts finished the 2015 season with a 5-10 overall, but earned an appearance in the CAA Championship Game (L, 9-8, vs. Towson).
- UMass also opened five prior seasons with back-to-back ranked games, doing so in 1975, '76, '77, '84 and '88. National rankings are available beginning in 1973.
