Men’s Lacrosse Downed By Army In Season-Opener

Philpott tallies three points, Hochman grabs eight groundballs in loss
WEST POINT, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse opened the 2020 season at No. 16 nationally ranked Army West Point's Michie Stadium with a 17-4 loss to the Black Knights. Redshirt senior midfielder Billy Philpott had a pair of goals and an assist for three points in the defeat.
Junior attack Chris Connolly and senior midfielder Jeff Trainor scored once each. Junior midfielder Kevin Tobin added an assist.
Freshman Zack Hochman went 12-of-22 on faceoffs and grabbed eight groundballs. Classmate Matt Knote got the start in net and made 10 saves against 15 goals allowed. Senior Cameron Carpenter relieved Knote with seven minutes, 22 seconds to play and posted one save versus two goals given up.
Junior Sam Eisenstadt left the defensive effort with two caused turnovers alongside three groundballs.
The Black Knights (1-0 overall) opened the game with nine consecutive goals and led by that margin at halftime. Brandon Nichtern paved the way on attack with four goals and three assists while Sean O'Brien notched three goals and helped on one more.
The Minutemen generated their offense in the third quarter as Philpott put in the team's first goal of the year 26 seconds in. However, Massachusetts and Army traded goals back-and-forth during the frame and the Black Knights held a 13-4 margin headed to the final quarter.
Massachusetts continues its season on the road at No. 13 Ohio State (2-0) on Sat., Feb. 15 with a 1 p.m. game.
