Need to Knows
• University of Massachusetts women's basketball looks for back-to-back wins as the Minutewomen head to Davidson for a Sun., Feb. 2 tilt. Opening tip is scheduled for 1 p.m. at John M. Belk Arena.
• Massachusetts is looking to continue riding the momentum of a 64-50 Field Trip Day win over Richmond on Wed., Jan. 29. Over 3,600 local students turned out to the Mullins Center for the nationally-televised game which was the first victory in the annual occasion since the 2014-15 season.
• In the win over Richmond junior Sam Breen made a splash in her first collegiate start, dropping a game-high 26 points on 11-of-22 shooting while also pulling down eight rebounds. Senior Hailey Leidel contributed 11 points, vaulting Leidel over 1,700 in her career and becoming the first player in program history to log 1,700 points, 600 rebounds and 200 assists.
• Fellow senior Vashnie Perry was instrumental all over the floor in the Richmond game with eight points, five rebounds, four steals and eight assists which tied a career-high.
• Leidel moved up to No. 3 on the Massachusetts all-time career scoring list in the game at George Washington on Jan. 26. The Brownstown, Mich. native (1,701) needs 90 points to tie former Minutewoman Octavia Thomas (1992-96; 1,791 points) for No. 2 on the list. She has made at least one three-point field goal in 26 straight games since Feb. 24, 2019, and 43 of her last 44 games dating back to Dec. 7, 2018.
• Breen has jumped into action and made an immediate impact since becoming eligible beginning at Iona on Dec. 21, 2019. Since completing her year in residency mandated by NCAA transfer rules, Breen is averaging nearly a double-double with 16.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. She arrived at UMass in January 2019 after transferring from Penn State.
• Among multiple crucial additions for the Maroon and White this season has been the interior shot-altering presence of freshman Maeve Donnelly. With 57 blocks on the season, Donnelly has set the freshman program record after passing Melissa Gurile (52 in 1992-93) in the George Washington game on Jan. 26.
• The Minutewomen cap a two-game road swing at George Mason on Wed., Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. UMass and Davidson will meet again at the Mullins Center in a Sat., Feb. 22 matinee.
