Massachusetts Rallies For 70-62 Win at Davidson

February 02, 2020 | Women's Basketball

Breen records third career double-double performance as Minutewomen erase 13-point deficit

DAVIDSON, N.C. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball faced a 13-point deficit in the third quarter, but the Minutewomen rallied to ultimately take a 70-62 victory on Sunday at Davidson's John M. Belk Arena. Now 16-6 on the season, Massachusetts has matched its overall win total from a year ago while also improving to 6-3 in the Atlantic 10. Davidson falls to 13-8 and 6-2 in the league.

Junior Sam Breen posted her third career double-double, putting down 26 points for the second straight game and pulling down 11 rebounds, both game-highs. Senior Hailey Leidel was just behind with 25 points and both Leidel and fellow senior Vashnie Perry dished out four assists.

Junior Bre Hampton-Bey and freshman Maeve Donnelly each logged eight boards and Donnelly recorded five blocks in the win. Now with 62 stops on the season, Donnelly already owns the freshmen program record and sits fourth on the single-season list.

Leidel sparked the Minutewomen offense with the squad's first eight points of the game, including setting up an 8-0 run. That stretch was capped off by a perfectly-drawn charge by Hampton-Bey that turned into a trey for Breen. Davidson then pulled within one at the end of the quarter on the strength of an 8-1 run.

The Wildcats took their first lead with under five minutes left in the second stanza and Breen brought Massachusetts back within one, grabbing the board on a missed free throw and putting home a quick reverse layup. At that time UMass trailed just 27-26, but Davidson went on to close the half on a 12-0 run, taking a 39-26 lead into the break.

Massachusetts clawed back in part thanks to a 10-2 third quarter rally that brought the squad within two possessions. Breen's layup in the paint with 56 seconds remaining leveled the score at 47-all and junior Paige McCormick connected on a left-corner trey at the buzzer to regain a 50-47 advantage and wrap a 7-0 stretch.

Both teams exchanged buckets down the home stretch of the fourth quarter, remaining within two possessions until the last minute of regulation. With Davidson forced to foul and the shot clock off, Hampton-Bey made a pair at the free throw line with 13 seconds left and Leidel went back with five seconds on the clock, putting the victory away with two more at the charity stripe.

On the afternoon, UMass shot 36.9% from the field (24-of-65) to Davidson's 39% (23-of-59). The Minutewomen committed only six turnovers and had the edge in the paint, 32-20, as well as on the glass (43-39).

The Minutewomen close out a quick two-game road trip with a 7 p.m. game at George Mason on Wed., Feb. 5.
