THE OPENING TIP: THE MASSACHUSETTS-RHODE ISLAND PREVIEW
 • University of Massachusetts women's basketball opens the home schedule as well as the Atlantic 10 slate on Tuesday, hosting conference rival Rhode Island at the Mullins Center. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. This game was originally scheduled for Dec. 28 and moved up in a Dec. 4 announcement from the A-10.

• Tuesday's game will be streamed on ESPN+ and available on TV on NESN. Jay Burnham (PxP) and Adam Giardino (color) will call the game, with Nick McGahan and Scott Wiktorowski producing the broadcast backstage.

• Massachusetts is 2-1 this season on the heels of a 71-50 victory at Fairfield on Dec. 3. It was a 19-6 Minutewomen run in the first half that swung momentum to UMass, after a back-and-forth start. Three players finished in double-figure scoring, led by 21 from senior Sam Breen on 9-of-14 from the field. Sophomore Sydney Taylor added her second 20-point performance as a Minutewoman.

• Freshman Makennah White logged her first collegiate double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds in the win.

• Rhody is coming off of a tough 70-69 loss at Penn State last Thursday night. It was a last-second layup for the Nittany Lions to steal the victory but URI still received 17 points from redshirt junior transfer Emmanuelle Tahane.

• These teams split the season series last year, with the home team winning each tilt. UMass knocked off the Rams, 73-53, on Senior Day in Amherst, while URI snagged a 69-66 win at the Ryan Center–which ended a program-record 11-game winning streak for Massachusetts.
