December 08, 2020 | Women's Basketball

Philoxy, Taylor notch 19 points each in Atlantic 10-opening victory

AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts women's basketball opened its Atlantic 10 Conference schedule with a 79-69 victory over Rhode Island at the Mullins Center on Tuesday afternoon. The Minutewomen improved to 3-1 overall with the win while Rhode Island dropped to 0-3.

Destiney Philoxy and Sydney Taylor tied for the team lead in points with 19 apiece. Philoxy also posted a game-high six assists, three rebounds and three steals. Ber'Nyah Mayo added 18 points, five assists, four rebounds and as many steals.

Johanna Muzet led Rhode Island with 26 points and had nine boards as well. Emmanuelle Tahane tallied 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting, nine rebounds and five assists.

The Minutewomen cruised to a 12-0 lead from the jump as the Massachusetts defense kept Rhode Island off the scoreboard for the opening five minutes, 46 seconds of the game. In that span, Rhody turned the ball over four times and missed both field goal attempts.

The Rams narrowed the gap to three late in the second quarter; however, a strong finish to the frame pushed the UMass advantage back to 12 before the break. After a Kassondra Brown layup cut the Maroon and White lead to 34-31 with 3:43 to go, the Minutewomen responded with the final nine points of the frame. Taylor book-ended the scoring streak with a layup and a three-pointer while Philoxy and Maddie Sims also connected on buckets during the stretch.

UMass grew its lead to 52-37 by the 6:27 mark of the third only for Muzet to keep Rhody within reach via eight consecutive points. Muzet spearheaded the Rams' offense throughout the third, totaling 16 of the team's 23 points, as Rhody again made it to a one-possession game. However, the Minutewomen steadied themselves in the fourth and used a 9-3 run to bump their advantage back to double-digits, 73-63, with 2:44 to play. Taylor provided seven of the nine points during the crucial stretch as she went 3-of-3 from the field and 1-for-1 at the foul line.

Massachusetts shot 55.2 percent from the field (32-of-58) during the win, including 58.3 percent from beyond the arc (7-of-12), and did not trail during the game. Rhode Island finished 29-for-59 (49.2 percent) overall and only 4-for-13 from three (30.8 percent).

The Minutewomen play next with a non-conference game at New Hampshire on on Thurs., Dec. 10 at 6 p.m.
