Game Notes Massachusetts // Richmond

Need to Knows
• University of Massachusetts women's basketball returns home to the Mullins Center for the program's annual Field Trip Day game, hosting Richmond on Wed., Jan. 29 in a noon contest. The matchup will be televised nationally on NBCSN and on NBC Sports online. Kate Scott (play-by-play) and Debbie Taylor (color) will be behind the microphone.

• A reminder that UMass Athletics is offering free admission to all fans for Wednesday's game. No tickets are required for entry and more information can be found by clicking here. Contact the UMass Athletics Ticket Office by phone at (866) UMASS-TIX with questions and for more details.

• As part of the Field Trip Day festivities, over 3,100 elementary and middle school students from around Western Massachusetts will be in attendance. A UMass victory on Wednesday would mark the first such result for a home Field Trip Day game since the 2014-15 season.

• The Minutewomen are looking to return to their winning ways after three tough losses that followed a program-record 11-game winning streak. Most recently, the squad dropped a one-possession game at George Washington by a 50-47 score on Sun., Jan. 26. Senior Hailey Leidel led Massachusetts with a game-high 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting, but down the stretch the Minutewomen could not answer a furious GW rally.

• Historically Richmond has had UMass' number with a 20-4 all-time series lead, however the Minutewomen have taken two of the last three meetings. It was a complete team effort that lifted the Maroon and White in the most recent tilt–a 64-38 result in Amherst on Feb. 27, 2019. Three Minutewomen scored in double-figures, Leidel had 10 rebounds and then-freshman Destiney Philoxy handed out a game-high six assists.

• Leading up to the Rhode Island game on Jan. 19, UMass recorded its first 4-0 start in Atlantic 10 play since the 1996-97 season; a feat that last occurred before any current member of the roster was born. It matched the best stretch to conference play in program history.

• Leidel moved up to No. 3 on the Massachusetts all-time career scoring list in the game at George Washington on Jan. 26. The Brownstown, Mich. native (1,690) needs 101 points to tie former Minutewoman Octavia Thomas (1992-96; 1,791) for No. 2 on the list. At the top is Sue Peters (1,858), who reached that mark in a career spanning 1976-80. She has made at least one three-point field goal in 25 straight games since Feb. 24, 2019, and 42 of her last 43 games dating back to Dec. 7, 2018.

• Leidel is 10 points away from becoming the first player in program history to record 1,700 points, 600 rebounds and 200 assists in a career.

• Junior and Penn State transfer Sam Breen has jumped into action and made an immediate impact since becoming eligible beginning at Iona on Dec. 21, 2019. Since completing her year in residency mandated by NCAA transfer rules, Breen is averaging nearly a double-double with 15.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.

• Among multiple crucial additions for the Maroon and White this season has been the interior shot-altering presence of freshman Maeve Donnelly.  With 54 blocks on the season, Donnelly has set the freshman program record after passing Melissa Gurile (52 in 1992-93) in the George Washington game on Jan. 26.

• The Minutewomen head back on the road this weekend and visit Davidson on Sun., Feb. 2 in a 1 p.m. tilt from John M. Belk Arena.
