Need to Knows
• Winners in a program-record 11 straight games and 14 of its last 15, University of Massachusetts women's basketball is back on the road on Sun., Jan. 19 to face cross-New England and Atlantic 10 rival Rhode Island. Opening tip at the Ryan Center is scheduled for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.

• UMass is off to its first 4-0 start in Atlantic 10 play since the 1996-97 season; a feat that last occurred before any current member of the roster was born. A victory on Sunday would give the squad its first 5-0 start to league action since joining the conference in 1983-84.

• Entering Friday, Jan. 17, UMass' 11-game winning streak is tied with South Carolina for the fourth-longest active streak in Division I, behind UCLA (16), Gonzaga (15) and Stony Brook (14). UCLA faces crosstown foe USC on Friday night, Gonzaga is at San Francisco Saturday and Stony Brook is at UAlbany on Saturday.

• The Minutewomen are back on the hardwood after a Wed., Jan. 15 victory over La Salle at the Mullins Center. Junior Sam Breen recorded her second career double-double effort with 22 points and 12 rebounds on the night, both team-highs. Senior Hailey Leidel sank 18 points and juniors Bre Hampton-Bey and Paige McCormick had 10 apiece. Senior Vashnie Perry tied a career-high with eight assists.

• UMass has faced Rhody 82 times, more than any other program in the Atlantic 10, and leads the all-time series 47-35. The Minutewomen have taken four straight meetings and six of the last seven, including two victories in 2018-19.

• Leidel moved up to No. 4 on the Massachusetts all-time career scoring list in the game at Boston University on Dec. 11. The Brownstown, Mich. native (1,652) needs 29 points to tie former Minutewoman Melissa Gurile (1992-96; 1,679) for No. 3 on the list. At the top is Sue Peters (1,858), who reached that mark in a career spanning 1976-80.

• In the St. Bonaventure game on Jan. 8, Leidel eclipsed both the 1,600-point and 600-rebound milestones, becoming one of only three players in program history to accomplish such a feat. She has made at least one three-point field goal in 22 straight games since Feb. 24, 2019, and 39 of her last 40 games dating back to Dec. 7, 2018.

• Perhaps one of the biggest new additions for the Maroon and White this season has been the interior shot-altering presence of freshman Maeve Donnelly. Donnelly (2.76 blk/gm) leads the A-10 in blocks per game and is second among Division I freshmen. With 47 total, she needs just five blocks to tie the UMass freshman record–Melissa Gurile had 52 stops in her rookie season of 1992-93.

• UMass is back home on Wed., Jan. 22, hosting VCU in a 5 p.m. game at the Mullins Center. That matchup will be televised on NESN.
