Minutewomen fall for first time in A-10 play as program-record 11-game winning streak ends

KINGSTON, R.I. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball erased a 15-point first half deficit and led in the final five minutes of the game, but Rhode Island battled back to outlast the Minutewomen, 69-66, on Sunday afternoon at the Ryan Center.

The loss ends UMass' program-record 11-game winning streak which stood tied for the third-longest in the nation, dropping the squad to 14-4 and 4-1 in the Atlantic 10. Rhody improves to 10-7 overall and 3-2 in the league.

Junior Sam Breen came off the bench to provide 26 points and nine rebounds for the Maroon and White and both junior Bre Hampton-Bey and sophomore Destiney Philoxy had 11 points apiece. Senior Hailey Leidel's four steals were a game-high and classmate Vashnie Perry had four assists to lead the squad.

Breen gave Massachusetts its first lead at 60-59 after Philoxy found her in the post for a turnaround jumper with 4:24 left in regulation. On the next offensive possession, Philoxy converted an and-one to swell the advantage to 63-59, but from there the Rams closed the matchup on a 10-3 run to steal the victory.
Still down just one at 64-63 with 15 seconds left and the shot clock off, Hampton-Bey came up with a clutch offensive board which allowed the Maroon and White to use its final timeout. Unfortunately for UMass, a turnover followed out of the break ending with a three-point play for Rhody's Nicole Jorgensen with eight seconds remaining.

It was a difficult-shooting first quarter for the Minutewomen, who were held to just 3-of-16 (18.8%) from the field in the first 10 minutes while Rhody built up a 22-9 lead by the end of the period. A 9-0 UMass run overlapping the middle two periods was spearheaded by Breen and Philoxy, whittling down the deficit to no more than two possessions as the game hit the home stretch.

Massachusetts committed just four turnovers on the day–tied for the fewest by an Atlantic 10 team this season and the least by the Minutewomen dating back to the 1997-98 campaign.

Rhode Island had 21 turnovers on the day, but ended with the rebounding edge by a 56-31 margin. For the game, the Rams shot 25-of-54 (46.3%) from the field led by a double-double effort (21 points, 10 rebounds) from Jorgensen.

Massachusetts will look to bounce back on Wed., Jan. 22 in a 5 p.m. game vs. VCU at the Mullins Center. The matchup will be televised both on NESN and ESPN+. For tickets, visit UMass Athletics Ticket Central online, the Mullins Center Box Office in person, or call (866) UMASS-TIX.
