Minutemen Fall On The Road At Dayton In League Opener
September 28, 2019 | Men's Soccer
UMass opens up home Atlantic 10 play on Saturday against Saint Louis for Alumni Weekend.
DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team dropped its Atlantic 10 opener on the road to Dayton on Saturday night as the Flyers netted a pair of second half goals to come away with a 2-0 win. Both teams put five shots on frame on the night with UMass attempting 14 shots throughout 90 minutes of action.
The Minutemen (4-5-0 Overall, 0-1-0 Atlantic 10) got a trio of early chances at going ahead 1-0 in the first half as Quinn Serafino found himself with three opportunities in front of goal. Serafino opened with the first shot in the 12th-minute after Logan Brown set up his fellow freshman down the right side for a shot that was wide of target. Serafino and Brown connected once again five minutes later for a Serafino header in front of goal that was saved.
UMass looked to break through in the 30th-minute on a Serafino run as the freshman beat the Dayton keeper off a long Marvyn Dorchin free kick and a redirection from James McPherson, but the play was called offside to negate the would-be Minuteman goal. McPherson had an opportunity of his own in front of goal in the 38th-minute, but could not get solid contact onto a ball on target that was cleared out of goal by the Dayton defense.
The Flyers converted on their first shot on target in the 55th-minute, going ahead 1-0 on a Laurel Aug goal from the right side that got behind Dorchin on the near post. Laurel went on to score again in the 80th-minute to stretch the lead to two goals that held until the end of the match.
The Minutemen return home to Rudd Field for their first home Atlantic 10 game of 2019 as they play host on Saturday to Saint Louis on Alumni Weekend.
