Second Half Penalty Kick Sends BC Past UMass, 1-0

The Minutemen attempted 13 shots of their own on the night led by James McPherson’s four.
NEWTON, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team surrendered a penalty kick in the 48th-minute that led to Boston College's lone goal in a 1-0 defeat on the road Tuesday evening. The Minutemen (4-4-0 Overall) took 13 shots on the night, led by four from James McPherson that included an attempt with under 20 seconds remaining in the one goal game.
Offensively, the Minutemen attempted nine shots in the opening 45 minutes of play, opening the chances in the fifth minute with a McPherson shot before Tyler Mann forced BC goalkeeper Christian Garner into the first save for either side in the 13th minute. UMass turned up the pressure in their final third in the last seven minutes of the first half, earning a corner that led to a Ryan Saul header. Chandler O'Dwyer followed moments later by putting one on target that was saved prior to a pair of freshmen in Ryan Levay and Quinn Serafino taking a chance at goal.
The Eagles hit the post twice in the first half and earned a late chance of their own as the clock wound down first as Mike Suski took a shot with under 30 seconds left that was saved by Dorchin for his first of five saves on the game.
BC applied early pressure in the opening moments of the second half, forcing Dorchin into a pair of early saves before they earned a penalty kick that resulted in a Joe Kellett goal in the 48th-minute.
The Minutemen will open up Atlantic 10 conference play on Saturday with a road matchup at Dayton set to kickoff at 7 p.m.
