Massachusetts Falters In Overtime At Hofstra, 10-9

Trainor nets 100th career point in loss
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse dropped a 10-9 overtime decision to Hofstra University on the road at James M. Shuart Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Junior midfielder Jeff Trainor recorded his 100th career point in the loss, which dropped UMass to 7-4 on the season and 1-1 in the CAA.
Isaac Paparo made an impact on both sides of the field with as the senior close defenseman had two goals, as many caused turnovers and five groundballs. Freshman attack Gabriel Procyk added two tallies as the lone additional multi-goal scorer.
Sophomore attack Chris Connolly led Massachusetts with four points on a goal and three assists while junior attack Devin Spencer scored once and dished out two helpers. Four additional Minutemen had one point apiece on goals by sophomore midfielder Kevin Cutinella, junior midfielder Charlie O'Brien and Trainor and an assist by sophomore midfielder Kevin Tobin.
Senior Tom Meyers won 16 of his 23 faceoffs and collected eight groundballs. Senior goalie Sean Sconone took the loss in net with nine saves, six groundballs and one caused turnover.
Ryan Tierney led Hofstra with six goals and two assists for eight points. Robert Casey started in the cage and made 16 saves for the win.
Massachusetts forced overtime after Sconone made his eighth save of the afternoon. With the game tied at nine, Hofstra on the attack and time winding down, Tierney fired a low shot inside the right post. Sconone ranged to his left, scooped the ball off the turf before it skidded into the back of the net and fired a downfield pass to send the game to the extra frame.
UMass won the overtime faceoff and earned a look up-close, but Casey turned aside Spencer after the junior attackman rolled from X and sent a leaping try inside the top-right corner. Sconone made one save in overtime when he blocked a Joey Elarde shot with his body at the one-minute, 40-second mark, but following the restart, Dylan McIntosh found space at the crease for the man-up game-winning tally.
After an early offense push from the Pride, Massachusetts posted five of six goals scored in a 15-minute span covering the first and second quarters for a 6-3 margin. Paparo helped spark the series with two long-pole tallies while Cutinella, O'Brien and Procyk each had one.
After O'Brien evened the game at 2-all, Paparo stepped into a straightaway shot from 10 yards out with one minutes, 59 seconds to go in the first for the first UMass lead of the day. Cutinella and Procyk sandwiched tallies around a Tierney goal for Hofstra before Paparo secured the multi-goal game.
For his second of the day – scored with 2:59 to go in the second – Paparo fielded a pass from Tobin and sent an overhead blast pinballing off the inside of the goal piping and into the back of the net.
Hofstra knotted the game a six-apiece as Tierney and Riley Forte converted back-to-back during the opening minutes of the thirf quarter; however, UMass responded in-kind.
Spencer and Connolly combined for consecutive scoring plays. Spencer put UMass back in front, 7-6, on a feed from Connolly before Spencer dished a pass to Connolly for Connolly's 20th tally of the year with 6:32 to go in the third.
After Tierney scored his fifth of the day, Trainor earned his 100th career point via his 54th goal as a Minuteman. Trainor rushed the left post, leapt into the air and dropped a shot into the back of the net before he crashed into the crease with 12:52 to go in the fourth.
Trainor's tally proved the last goal for the Minutemen and Hofstra posted two late conversions to force the extra period. Jimmy Yanes scored in transition with 3:52 to go and Tierney netted his sixth with 1:48 to play for the 9-all score headed into overtime.
Hofstra outshot Massachusetts, 40-39, though the Minutemen had 25 on-target tries to 19 for the Pride. UMass finished 18-for-21 on clears while the Pride went 21-for-22. Massachusetts turned the ball over 22 times to 13 by Hofstra.
UMass ends its two-game road trip with a Sat., April 13 contest at Towson (7-3, 2-0 CAA). The first faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
