Massachusetts Upsets No. 9 Towson On The Road, 14-10

April 13, 2019 | Men's Lacrosse

Sconone’s 17 saves, hat tricks by Procyk and Trainor push UMass to victory

TOWSON, Md. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse upset No. 9 nationally-ranked Towson at Johnny Unitas Stadium as the Minutemen held off a late charge by the Tigers thanks to 17 saves by Sean Sconone and hat tricks from Gabriel Procyk and Jeff Trainor.

The victory improved Massachusetts to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in the CAA while Towson dropped to 7-4 and 2-1 in the CAA.

Chris Connolly finished with a team-high four points on a goal and three assists, which gave Connolly an even 100 points on his UMass career. Connolly is the first Minuteman to reach 100 career points in less than two seasons since Jim McAleavey (1988-91) did so in 1989.

Ben Spencer added two goals and an assist, Charlie O'Brien scored twice and Kevin Tobin notched a goal and assist.

Kevin Cutinella (goal), Dan O'Brien (assist), Isaac Paparo (goal) and Devin Spencer (assist) rounded out the UMass scorers.

In front of Sconone's 17 saves, Paparo posted seven groundballs and one caused turnover. Matthew Hill scooped up three groundballs in support of faceoff specialist Tom Meyers, who won 10 draws and grabbed five groundballs.

Massachusetts pumped in six consecutive goals across the end of the first and beginning of the second quarters en route to a 7-1 lead. O'Brien scored twice in the run while Cutinella, Procyk, Ben Spencer and Tobin contributed one apiece.

After one each from Cutinella, Charlie O'Brien and Procyk, Ben Spencer sent the Maroon and White into the first break up 5-1 with his first of the day. The 6-foot-4 senior midfielder rushed to the left, found freedom near the post and deposited an overhand shot into the back of the cage as he was pushed into the crease from behind.

Tobin followed with his 15th tally of the year less than three minutes into the second when he raced from X around the left post and fired an uncontested shot by Tyler Canto. Procyk followed with a putback tally at the 8:24 mark as Canto turned aside Billy Philpott's initial attempt before Procyk found the loose ball and fired in the seventh goal of the day.

After a Brendan Sunday goal snapped the run, Massachusetts poured on three more and bumped the margin to 12-3 entering the fourth quarter. Trainor tallied twice in the span before Procyk netted the first half hat trick.

Less than a minute into the fourth, Paparo's tally offset one from Towson's Greg Ey, but the Tigers followed with a five-goal run as the Massachusetts lead dropped to four goals entering the last seven minutes of the game.

Trainor energized the offense and ended Towson's comeback try when the junior midfielder stepped into a 10-yard try at the 2:35 mark for his third goal of the day and his 19th on the year. Connolly's feed from X marked his100th career point, which the sophomore attack posted on 46 goals and 54 assists.

Towson took 52 shots to 34 by UMass and led in on-target tries, 27-23. The Minutemen finished 18-for-21 on clears while the Tigers went 17-for-18. Sunday paced the Towson offense with four goals and an assist.
