Sconone sets career mark with 21 saves, Minutemen spread offense across nine players
AMHERST, Mass. - Massachusetts men's lacrosse used a career-high 21 saves from senior goalie Sean Sconone and a balanced offense spearheaded by sophomore attack Chris Connolly for a 17-8 victory over Fairfield at Garber Field on Saturday. Connolly posted eight points via two goals and a career-high six assists as Massachusetts improved to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in the CAA.
Freshman attack Gabriel Procyk notched a game-high five goals via only six shots and scored each of his on-target attempts. Sophomore midfielder Kevin Tobin tallied three goals and two assists while junior position-mate Charlie O'Brien added a goal and two assists.
Midfielders Billy Philpott and Jeff Trainor rounded out the multi-point scorers with two goals apiece. Junior attack Nick Roy and Devin Spencer tallied once each while junior long-stick midfielder Dan O'Brien dished out one assist. The goal marked Roy's first of his UMass career.
Sconone's 21 saves bested his previous mark of 20 achieved twice - once against No. 13 Ohio State on Feb. 16, 2019 and also done at Fairfield on April 21, 2018. The East Islip, New York, native tallied 15 of his saves following halftime, including nine in the third quarter.
Four Minutemen caused a pair of turnovers on the day in Connolly, senior close defenseman Isaac Paparo, junior line-mate Jackson Suboch and Sconone. Paparo contributed four groundballs, as did Sconone and Charlie O'Brien.
Massachusetts posted the game's opening seven goals en route to a comfortable lead midway through the second quarter.
Connolly and Trainor scored both of their respective tallies on the game during the run while Philpott, Procyk and Charlie O'Brien converted once each. Connolly's second of the day capped the run as the sophomore rolled from X around the right post and slipped a low, sidearm shot into the back of the net with 10 minutes, 38 seconds to go in the second.
Fairfield ended its scoring drought with Jack Brennan's first of a team-best three goals on the day, scored with 7:47 to go in the second, as Brennan and Procyk began a series of back-and-forth exchanges.
Procyk netted his second of the day only 18 seconds later, but Brennan followed 13 seconds after Procyk as Brennan brought Fairfield within 8-2. Procyk answered with a behind-the-back finish for the hat trick, the eighth game with three or more goals in his inaugural year with the program.
Connolly, operating at X, sent a pass to Procyk as Procyk crashed toward the left post. Procyk nabbed the ball in-stride and whirled a shot around his left shoulder and inside the right post for the highlight-reel tally.
Fairfield responded with back-to-back scores and moved with 9-4 of the Minutemen with 3:45 to go in the second; however, Massachusetts totaled the game's next five goals and put the contest out of reach.
