First Half Run Leads Dartmouth Past Women's Lax 19-7
March 17, 2019 | Women's Lacrosse
Big Green use six-goal run to close first half in non-conference finale for Minutewomen.
HANOVER, N.H. - A six-goal run to close the first half proved the difference maker as Dartmouth defeated the UMass women's lacrosse team 19-7 on Sunday afternoon at Scully-Fahey Field. The loss closed out the non-conference slate for the Minutewomen (5-3) who start Atlantic 10 play next Friday night (7 PM) at Davidson.
UMass was without the services of the nation's leading goal scorer Kiley Anderson who missed the game due to injury. The 13th-ranked draw specialist was also missed in the center circle as Dartmouth (3-3) won 18-of-27 draws on the day.
That led to a 39-to-23 advantage in shots for the Big Green which also had a 21-to-15 edge in groundballs to pick up extra possessions limiting the Minutewomen.
Haley Connaughton and Stephanie Croke each tallied two goals and an assist to lead the UMass offense. Kaitlyn Cerasi (assist), Brinley Anderson and Kelly Marra each scored goals as well.
Dartmouth saw Katie Bourque (assist) and Ellie Carson each score four goals, while Kellen D'Alleva had a game-high six points on two goals and four assists. Keeper Becca Wade made seven saves to pick up the win.
The Big Green opened the game with a three-goal run in the first four minutes of play setting the pace of the game. Kelly Marra got UMass on the board at the 25:40 mark, but Dartmouth pushed the lead to four with back-to-back goals afterwards. After Dartmouth scored five of the next six goals, the Minutewomen had back-to-back tallies from Croke and Cerasi to pull the deficit back to four with 9:41 left in the first half. But that was as close as UMass could get with the Big Green scoring six more times to close out the opening stanza before then adding three more to start the second half building out a 17-4 lead.
