Women's Lax Opens A-10 Play With 20-9 Win At Davidson

Cassidy Doster nets career-high five goals to lead Minutewomen.
DAVIDSON, N.C. - A five goal night from Cassidy Doster propelled the UMass women's lacrosse team to a 20-9 win at Davidson on Friday night in the Atlantic 10 Conference opener for both squads. Overall, 10 different Minutewomen (6-3, 1-0 A-10) tallied goals on the night including seven who had multiple scores.
For Doster, the five goals marked a new career-high while she added a pair of groundballs and a draw control as well. Kaitlyn Cerasi scored a pair of goals and posted a team-high three assists as well. Haley Connaughton, Stephanie Croke and Hannah Palau each had a pair of goals and an assist. Gina Carroll earned the win making four saves before giving way to Lauren Hiller who made three in the second half seeing her first action of the season following a preseason injury.
Three Wildcats (6-3, 0-1 A-10) tallied two goals in the game with Braeden Dial scoring a team-high three points with an assist as well. Delaney Guhman took the loss in goal making seven saves while allowing 19 of the 20 goals.
Overall, UMass held a 35-to-20 advantage in shots, while Davidson held a slight 16-to-15 advantage in draw controls.
An early four-goal run by the Minutewomen in the first half put UMass up 6-1 before Davidson then scored back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to three at the 21:30 mark. But UMass answered that goal and two other Wildcat goals in the opening stanza with three three goal bursts taking a 15-5 lead into the intermission.
Five straight UMass goals started the second half to put the game away with 11:34 remaining. Davidson scored four straight to close out the game giving the final score.
UMass will return to action on Sunday at Garber Field as VCU visits. The opening draw is set for 1 PM and admission is free to all.
