Connolly pots five goals, Sconone makes 13 saves in victory
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse sophomore attack Chris Connolly score five times while senior goalie Sean Sconone turned aside 13 shots as the Minutemen went to Harvard's Jordan Field and took a 12-9 win from the Crimson on Saturday.
Junior midfielder Jeff Trainor scored twice and dished out a pair of assists while freshman attack Gabriel Procyk and sophomore midfielder Kevin Tobin added multi-point performances as each scored once and handed out an assist. Freshman midfielder Scott Del Zotto, senior close defenseman Isaac Paparo and redshirt junior two-way midfielder Billy Philpott each added a goal to the scoresheet.
Paparo and Jackson Suboch contributed a pair of caused turnovers each in front of Sconone, while Paparo scooped up three groundballs. Senior faceoff specialist Tom Meyers was dominant at the dot with a 16-of-25 date that included eight groundballs.
Myles Hamm led Harvard (0-2) with four points via two goals and as many assists while Kyle Mullin made 13 saves in net.
A four-goal run in the fourth put Massachusetts ahead for good as the Maroon and White turned an 8-7 deficit into an 11-8 advantage. Hamm scored during a man-up opportunity for Harvard, but Paparo responded on the other end, followed by Del Zotto and two from Connolly.
After Paparo took a seat for a penalty earned during the opening faceoff of the frame, and Harvard scored on their extra-man chance, the senior close defenseman used a transition opportunity to find the back of the net with 11:27 to go. Connolly later created Del Zotto's scoring play when he poked possession away from Harvard's Charlie Olmert, which Trainor scooped and fed to Del Zotto unmarked in front.
Meyer's faceoff dominance helped seal it as he won the next two faceoffs, which immediately resulted in back-to-back Connolly goals as UMass turned the 8-8 game into an 11-8 lead in the span of 86 seconds. Philpott iced the game with 17 seconds to go, his third tally of the year.
Massachusetts (1-2) trailed by three at the end of the first quarter as four Crimson offset Connolly's first of five goals on the day for the 4-1 home advantage at the break.
Connolly sparked the offense in the second quarter when he converted at the crease for the second time on the afternoon with 12 minutes, 47 seconds to go in the stanza. Tobin and Trainor followed with back-to-back conversions as Massachusetts knotted it at 4-all midway through the second.
After a pair from Harvard pushed the Crimson's back into the lead, Connolly finished off the first half hat trick with his third of the day as UMass entered halftime down, 6-5.
Massachusetts again erased its deficit during the third quarter as the teams traded scores heading into the fourth. Procyk and Trainor sandwiched tallies around Kyle Anderson's man-up tallying for a 7-7 contest with 15 minutes to play.
The Maroon and White continue their four-game road streak with a trip to Yale's Reese Stadium in New Haven, Connecticut, on Sat., March 2. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m. on ESPNplus.
