Hannah Palau, Kiley Anderson each net hat tricks for Minutewomen.
AMHERST, Mass. - No. 1 Boston College used a pivotal 6-to-2 run in the first half to build a seven-goal halftime cushion en route to a 25-14 win over the UMass women's lacrosse team on Thursday afternoon at Garber Field. The 14 goals scored by the Minutewomen (1-1) marked the most allowed by the two-time national finalist Eagles who won their third straight to open the 2019 campaign.
Hannah Palau and Kiley Anderson each tallied three goals for UMass, while Kaitlyn Cerasi had a team-best five points on two goals and three assists. Cassidy Doster added two goals and an assist, while Haley Connaughton notched a goal and two helpers to round out the Minutewomen's top scorers. Draw specialist Caitlyn Petro posted a career-high nine draw controls among the Minutewomen's 15 in the game.
Boston College (3-0) was led by seven points from both Sam Appuzo and Kenzie Kent with each scoring four goals and recording three assists. Jenn Medjid and Sheila Rietano both scored three goals highlighting the Eagles' attack. Appuzo finished the day with a game-best 12 draw controls while collecting three groundballs and caused two turnovers.Â
UMass goalie Gina Carroll made 14 saves on 47 shots faced while also controlling four groundballs. Lauren Daly Made five saves in the win for the Eagles while allowing 13 goals in 54 minutes of work. Abbey Ngai closed out the final six minutes for BC making three saves and allowing one goal.
Boston College held a 47-to-27 shot advantage for the game including a 30-to-14 edge in the first half that was bolstered by winning 16-of-23 draws.Â
The Eagles opened the game scoring four straight, but back-to-back goals by Palau and Doster made it 4-2 at the 24:09 mark. BC scored six of the next eight goals building out a 10-4 lead with 11:46 left before intermission. The Minutewomen pulled back within five, but Boston College stretched the lead to as many as eight with UMass scoring in the final minute to make it 15-8 at the break.
UMass managed to keep the deficit around seven goals for the first 10 minutes of the second half, but a five-goal spurt for Boston College over the next eight minutes put the game out of reach down the stretch.
The Minutewomen will return to action next Wednesday, Feb. 27 at Harvard for a 3 PM opening draw.
