Harvard Holds Off Women's Lax, 18-12

February 27, 2019 | Women's Lacrosse

Minutewomen have strong start early, but Crimson receive stout second half defense in win.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - A stout defensive second half by Harvard spoiled a strong start for the UMass women's lacrosse team as the Crimson took an 18-12 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Jordan Field. The Minutewomen built out an early 6-3 lead in the contest, but Harvard took a one goal lead into intermission before conceding just three second half goals thanks to eight saves by goalie Grace Rotondo.

UMass (1-2) received three goals from both Stephanie Croke (2 assists) and Kaitlyn Cerasi (1 assist). Emma Dotsikas had a pair of goals and two assists, while Kiley Anderson notched two goals and a game-high 12 draw controls.

Harvard (2-1) had four goals from Grace Hulslander, Keeley MacAfee, and Madison Conklin. Hulslander led all players with a game-high six points after picking up two assists to go with her scoring. Rotondo earned the win after making 15 saves overall.

The first half saw both teams use key runs throughout. A five-goal spurt by the Minutewomen erased an early two-goal lead for Harvard putting UMass up 6-3 at the 18:09 mark. The Crimson closed the half scoring four straight taking a 10-9 lead into the locker room.

Cassidy Doster tied the game 10-10 just under four minutes into the second half, but Harvard netted three straight goals to answer. With 15:30 to go, Cerasi made it a two-goal game again, but the Crimson scored five straight taking a 16-11 lead with just under seven minutes remaining.

Both teams finished the game with 38 shots each with UMass holding the advantage 24-17 in the first half before Harvard had the upper-hand in the second half.

The Minutewomen controlled the draw circle early winning 11 straight to start the game, but Harvard limited the UMass' offensive conversion rate in the first half to negate the advantage. For the game, Massachusetts won 21-of-31 draws. The Crimson held a 29-to-19 advantage on groundballs with 14 in the first half which bolstered the late stanza run.

UMass will return to action against Connecticut on Saturday, March 2 at Garber Field. The opening draw is set for 1 PM and attendance is free to all.
