The Opening Tip
• Winners in six straight and nine of its last 10, University of Massachusetts women's basketball resumes play following the holiday break with a Mon., Dec. 30 game vs. Southern Connecticut State. Opening tip on ESPN+ is scheduled for 5 p.m. with Colin Cronin and Ryan Beaton on the call.
• Off to the squad's best start since 2006-07, a win on Saturday would give the Minutewomen their first seven-game winning streak since taking nine in a row from Feb. 4-March 1, 1998. The last time UMass had 10 wins before opening Atlantic 10 play was in 2006-07.
• Just before the holidays the Minutewomen picked up a 65-51 road win at Iona (Dec. 21). Senior Hailey Leidel led the way once again with 21 points (8-of-13 FG) and was followed up by classmate Vashnie Perry with 19 of her own (8-of-14 FG), while junior Bre Hampton-Bey also made her first start of the campaign.
• A UMass timeout with 2:55 left in the third allowed the Minutewomen to slow down Iona momentum as the Gaels pulled in front after halftime, 36-35. The break proved crucial as Leidel buried a right wing trey on the next possession to spark a 10-3 run and give the squad a lead they would not relinquish.
• Junior Sam Breen made her UMass debut at Iona with eight points and nine rebounds after sitting out due to NCAA transfer rules. Breen played in 26 games at Penn State during 2017-18 and 2018-19, and was the 2017 Pennsylvania Gatorade Player of the Year as a high school senior.
• Leidel moved up to No. 4 on the Massachusetts all-time career scoring list in the game at Boston University on Dec. 11. The Brownstown, Mich. native (1,567) needs 112 points to tie former Minutewoman Melissa Gurile (1992-96; 1,679) for No. 3 on the list. At the top is Sue Peters (1,858), who reached that mark in a career spanning 1976-80.
• Leidel is also one of 17 players in program history with at least 1,000 points plus 500 rebounds. She has made at least one three-point field goal in 17 straight games since Feb. 24, 2019, and 34 of her last 35 games dating back to Dec. 7, 2018.
• Freshman Maeve Donnelly has made an immediate impact down low for the Minutewomen, averaging 3.42 blocks per game which entered the weekend No. 5 in Division I and leading all rookies. At the same time, Donnelly's season block total (41) either matches or is above nine team totals in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
• In the nine games since UMass fell to Providence on Nov. 9, the Minutewomen (9-1) are averaging over 72 points per game with a +15.6 scoring margin. Leidel leads the attack averaging 19.6 points in that span followed up by sophomore Destiney Philoxy (13.6 ppg).
