Trio of seniors to provide on-field leadership during upcoming campaign
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse head coach Greg Cannella announced senior close defenseman Isaac Paparo, senior short-stick defensive midfielder Anthony Reale and senior goalie Sean Sconone as the team's captains for the 2019 season on Thursday. It marks Paparo's second year as an on-field leader for the program and the first for Reale and Sconone.
Paparo put forth one of the stronger individual campaigns in recent program history during 2018 as he won CAA Player of the Year, USILA and Inside Lacrosse All-American, NEILA All-Region First Team and All-CAA First Team. Paparo posted 45 groundballs and 25 caused turnovers as the team's defensive leader while he added 13 points on offense via five goals and eight assists. He was only the fourth junior year captain in Cannella's tenure alongside Buddy Hoffman (1995), Tim McCormack (2011) and Ryan Izzo (2014).
Reale appeared in 14 games as a junior during 2018 and contributed three groundballs, one caused turnover and his first collegiate point via an assist during the win over Sacred Heart on Feb. 13. Reale is the second member of his family to serve as a team captain for UMass men's lacrosse, alongside his brother, Joe Reale, who was a captain on the 2009 team.
Sconone started 10 of his 13 appearances in 2018 and capped the season with a 7-4 record, 9.68 goals-against average and .590 save percentage. The All-CAA Second Team selection and CAA Championship Most Outstanding Player led the team's eight-game charge through CAA play, the CAA Championship and into the NCAA Tournament with a 6-1 record in seven appearances, a 6.65 goals-against average and a .667 save percentage.
