Late Goal Propels Men’s Soccer To 1-1 Draw At Sacred Heart

August 27, 2018 | Men's Soccer

DeAndrae Brown found the back of the net in the 86th-minute of a 1-1 2OT draw.

FAIRFIELD, Conn.DeAndrae Brown scored his first goal as a member of the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team in the 86th-minute on Monday afternoon as the Minutemen secured a 1-1 draw on the road at Sacred Heart in double overtime. The Minutemen (0-1-1 Overall) will open up their home schedule on Friday, Aug. 31 against Saint Peter's on Rudd Field.

Brown's draw-securing goal from Samuel Asamoah and Brandon Merklin was the first UMass shot on target in the second half as the Minutemen finished the afternoon with six shots on goal in 16 attempts after putting five on target in eight attempts in the first 45 minutes. UMass did not attempt a shot through the first 10 minutes of play until Merklin put a shot on target in the 11th-minute to start a three-minute sequence in which the Minutemen put one shot wide and another on goal moments later.

Trey Miller made his first collegiate start for the Minutemen, coming up with four saves on five shots faced in 110 minutes in goal. Miller's first save came in the 20th minute as the Pioneers put their first shot of the afternoon on target before the redshirt freshman recorded another save just under two minutes later.

Sacred Heart capitalized on the first on-target attempt for either team in the second half with their lone goal of the day as Alejandro Arribas found the back of the net in the 64th-minute. The Pioneers pressured early in the first overtime, forcing Miller to make a save within the first minute of extra time before going without an on-goal attempt for the remainder of the contest.

UMass attempted a pair of shots midway through the second overtime as Stephen Ravazzoli and Merklin sent shots wide in the 104th and 105th-minutes of play before the Minutemen earned a pair of corner kicks in the final two minutes of the draw.

The Minutemen return home to Rudd Field on Friday to open up a two-game homestand that is capped off by a Labor Day contest against Bryant at 4 p.m.
