Pair Of Second Half Goals Push Minutemen Past Saint Peter’s, 2-1
August 31, 2018 | Men's Soccer
Davis Smith and Jack Fulton each scored their first goals of the season in the second half.
AMHERST, Mass. – Davis Smith and Jack Fulton put home a pair of second half goals as the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team defeated Saint Peter's 2-1 on Friday afternoon at Rudd Field. Fulton scored the game-winning goal in the 86th-minute on a strike up into the back of the net from five yards outside the 18-yard box.
Samuel Asamoah and Smith picked up the assists on Fulton's game-winner as the ball found the area of the senior forward off a final pass from Smith. On the game, Fulton attempted three of the Minutemen's 14 shots while UMass put five on goal compared to three by the Peacocks.
Smith's first goal of the 2018 campaign came just under 10 minutes into the second half on a set piece as the sophomore headed one into the pack of the net from a Brandon Merklin assist that went over the keeper to the far post to Smith. The assist marked the second of the season for Merklin to match his season-best marks set as both a junior and a sophomore.
Trey Miller came up with a big save in the 66th-minute to keep the goal advantage at one, making a diving stop to his left side near the far post off a shot from the Peacocks' Jordan Jowers.
Jowers went on to tie things up at 1-1 four minutes later with a penalty kick put into the left side of the net for his second of the year.
The Minutemen will remain at home for a matchup on Monday against Bryant at 4 p.m. on Rudd Field.
