The Minutemen will open up their 18-game schedule on the road at UMass Lowell tomorrow.
AMHERST, Mass. – Coming off of a championship season, the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team will open up the 18-game 2018 schedule tomorrow on the road at UMass Lowell. The Minutemen enter the season fresh off of an Atlantic 10 regular season outright crown and tournament title as they became the first team in the league to accomplish both feats in the game season since 1991.
The schedule features 10 home games to be played at Rudd Field with the home opener scheduled for Aug. 31 against Saint Peter's at 4 p.m. UMass hosts a trio of 2018 NCAA Tournament qualifiers in the span of just over two weeks, beginning the five-game stretch against No. 11-ranked Clemson on Sept. 9 before hosting No. 23-ranked Dartmouth on Sept. 22 and No. 19-ranked New Hampshire three days later on Sept. 25.
Beginning with the Monday, Sept. 3 matchup at home against Bryant, all home matches along with Atlantic 10 road games will be streamed live on ESPN+. The new deal with the A-10 was announced at the end of May and will allow a direct-to-consumer streaming service for $4.99 a month of $49.99 per year.
The conference title defense begins for UMass with the Atlantic 10 opener at home on Sept. 29 vs. St. Bonaventure in one of four league games this season. The Minutemen were picked to finish third in the league as voted on by the coaches with 144 points and two first-place votes while Fordham and VCU were picked first and second with 159 and 149 points respectively.
Key returners Davis Smith and Konrad Gorich earned Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference honors earlier in the week as part of a UMass crew that will return 15 players from a season ago while welcoming in 11 new additions to the team in five transfers and six freshmen. The group of newcomers features six in-state additions along with five from out-of-state. A pair of senior backline defenders in all-conference and all-region pick Brandon Merklin and Casey Hamill return to a UMass defense that held opponents under a goal per game last season with a 0.97 goals allowed per contest average.
The regular season will wrap up on the road at George Washington on Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. followed by the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship that will begin on Nov. 4 at campus sites with the top-eight teams facing off before the semifinals and finals take place at Robert Hermann Stadium in St. Louis, Mo. on Nov. 9 and 11.

Been a neat tradition we started three years ago — celebrating league champions with our leader @KSubbaswamy. @UMassMSoccer had a great fall 2017 campaign and we finally got them together to celebrate. This is the 8th program we've honored, celebrating 20+ league ?? since 2015! https://t.co/27YV3yVFKp
