UMass pressured late with six shots in a span of 12 minutes, but could not put in the equalizer.
LOWELL, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team pressured late offensively on Friday evening in their 2018 season opener on the road at UMass Lowell, but could not put home the equalizer as they fell to the River Hawks 1-0 at Cushing Field. The Minutemen (0-1-0 Overall) attempted six shots in a span of 12 minutes on an evening where they attempted 11 and put three on target.
UMass put together a pair of chances 16 minutes into the contest as Chandler O'Dwyer sent a corner in to Konrad Gorich that was secured by the River Hawk goalkeeper at the near post. O'Dwyer created another chance minutes later, shedding his defender with a dribbled move to allow for an attempt from about 10 yards outside of the 18-yard box that was saved by a stretched-out Zach Rowell.
Goalkeeper Marvyn Dorchin finished with two saves on the evening, picking up his first on a jumping one-handed save with 21 minutes left in the half as the River Hawks put together a shot on goal after a corner kick.
UMass Lowell's Jakov Basic scored the lone goal with 8:24 left in the first half, putting in a shot from four yards outside of the box on a free kick into the top left corner of the net to put the River Hawks ahead 1-0. The home team put together five of their six corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes. UMass keeper Dorchin helped keep the game within one goal with four minutes left in the first, coming out of the box to make a deflection with the open net behind him to keep UMass Lowell off the board after a Minutemen turnover in their attacking end.
Gorich created one of the best chances of the evening for the Minutemen in the 61st minute, sending a shot just left of the target on his first touch for the defender's only shot of the game.
The Minutemen kept up the pressure on the River Hawk defense in the second half, earning a pair of corners in a span of 90 seconds after earning just one in the first 70 minutes of play. Samuel Asamoah started off the six-shot, 12-minute run for UMass late in the contest, working his first shot of the sequence on a dribble move past the defender for an attempt from seven yards out that was deflected. Asamoah attempted the second of his four shots moments later after the ball found the senior's head, but was corralled by the River Hawk defense.
UMass will remain on the road for their second game of the 2018 campaign as they head to Fairfield, Conn. to face Sacred Heart on Monday, Aug. 27 at 3 p.m. before their home opener on Aug. 31 at Rudd Field against Saint Peter's.
