Lasko Deals Baseball to 7-1 Victory Over Saint Joseph’s

May 17, 2018 | Baseball

Junior posts complete game and career-high 10 strikeouts

PHILADELPHIA Justin Lasko went the distance for the third time in 2018 and received plenty of help from the UMass bats as the Minutemen defeated Saint Joseph's, 7-1, on Thursday at Smithson Field. En route to the win, Lasko (5-4) struck out a career-high 10 batters on the day, allowed just three hits and did not give up a single walk in his sixth outing of at least seven innings this year.

Seven different Minutemen combined for the club's 11 hits, including two apiece for Nolan Kessinger, Eddy Hart, Logan Greene and Cooper Mrowka. Greene added three RBIs and Hart knocked in a pair, while Mrowka scored twice in a 2-for-3 day out of the nine-hole.

Both Greene and Kessinger pushed their respective reached base streaks to 11 consecutive games.

UMass found the scoreboard in its first time at bat. After two quick outs, Hart made it aboard on a single to shortstop. Then with Greene at the dish, Hart took off on 3-2 and came all the way around to score when Greene floated a base hit to center field that a diving Kadar Namey could not come up with.

In the top of the second the Minutemen swelled the lead to 5-0, in part with some small ball. Alec Norton claimed first base on single to short, moving to third on a hit-and-run when Keith Linnane dropped a payoff pitch into left field. A nice safety squeeze laid down by Mrowka plated Norton and Mrowka himself made it to first base when nobody was covering the bag. With the batting order now turned over, Kessinger laced a grounder through the left side to score Linnane.

Greene placed a bases-loaded single into the outfield on what once again turned out to be a tough play in center, plating Kessinger and Mrowka and moving the score to 5-0.

Although the Hawks would respond with a solo home run into the bullpen in the bottom of the fourth, Lasko was unfazed by the shot and quickly ended the inning with his sixth strikeout of the day.

UMass wrapped up the day's scoring in the top of the sixth on Hart's two-run knock with the bases loaded and two away to bring home Mrowka and Andrew Noonan.

Lasko came up with a pair of stellar defensive plays in the last of the eighth. After a 1-1 pitch to Matt Maul caromed off Lasko, the righty stormed off the mound to his left to field the ball and flip to Mrowka on a bang-bang play. The next batter, Charlie Concannon, was also retired on a grounder back to Lasko, ending the inning.

The loss went to SJU's Matt Kennedy (1-4), who went 5.1 innings and was on the hook for all of UMass' seven runs on seven hits, although he did strike out seven.

Massachusetts plays the middle game of its series with the Hawks on Fri., May 18 at 1 p.m.
