Massachusetts plays the series rubber game with the Hawks on Saturday at 2 p.m.
PHILADELPHIA – University of Massachusetts baseball fell to Saint Joseph's, 3-1, on Saturday in the middle game of the sides' three-game series at Smithson Field. Both Logan Greene and Nolan Kessinger reached base safely for the 12th consecutive game in the loss.
Kessinger had a double and Greene went 2-for-3 with a walk, while Eddy Hart turned in a 2-for-4 day and scored the lone run of the contest for Massachusetts.
With one out in the fourth, Hart popped a payoff pitch through the right side and would later take second base when an errant pickoff attempt skipped past first base. Justen Voghel ultimately slapped a single that bounced over the Hawks' third baseman and into left field, plating Hart and giving UMass a 1-0 lead.
SJU evened the score at one-all in the bottom of the inning when Langston Livingston grounded into a double play that allowed Matt Maul to score.
The contest remained knotted until just after seventh inning stretch. David Viselli laced a double to left center field that nearly rolled to the wall and knocked in Liam Bendo. In the eighth, the Hawks added some insurance with Bendo's base hit up the middle that brought Livingston around from second.
UMass had chances to break the earlier 1-1 tie, but left the bases loaded in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Cole Stetzar (2-0) earned the win for Saint Joseph's in relief after a two-inning appearance, while Sean Harney (2-3) took the loss for the Minutemen.
The series rubber game is slated for Sat., May 19 at 2 p.m. at Smithson Field.
