Batting Practice
The 2018 regular season wraps up for University of Massachusetts baseball this week with a Tues., May 15 game at Fairfield (11:30 a.m.) before heading to Philadelphia for an Atlantic 10 series at Saint Joseph's from Thu., May 17-Sat., May 19. First pitch in the St. Joe's series is at 3 p.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
Fans should note that Tuesday's Fairfield game was originally scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., but was pushed up to 11:30 a.m. due to impending weather.
In 90 Feet, Your Destination Will Be On The Right
Both Logan Greene and Nolan Kessinger are riding reached base streaks of nine consecutive games with last weekend's Fordham series in the rearview mirror. In that nine-game span, Greene (.297) and Kessinger (.314) boast two of UMass' three highest batting averages. Ryan Lever (19) boasts the longest streak in that category among the Minutemen this season in addition to hitting safely in a team-best 14 consecutive contests from March 3-30.
Nah Nah Nah, Not On My Watch
Catcher Keith Linnane had a stellar weekend behind the plate during last weekend's Fordham series, throwing out 6-of-8 runners stealing. In the first game of a doubleheader on Fri., May 11, the senior went 4-for-5 in that category before gunning down 2-of-3 runners on Sun., May 13 including a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play. All of this transpired against the nation's leading team in stolen bases (155).
Would You Like Fries With That?
Marcus Fry had an explosive stretch at the plate during the week of April 30, hitting .389 with three doubles, a grand slam and 10 RBIs. The sophomore pushed his hitting streak to seven consecutive games and also had an extra-base hit in three of UMass' four contests. That was highlighted by a 3-for-5 performance against Hartford (Tues., May 1) in which Fry finished just a triple short of the cycle. On that night, his six runs batted in set a single-game career high and were the most in one contest by a Minuteman this season.
Notes From The Rubber
Justin Lasko went 7.2 innings and struck out seven on Sat., May 5 against Stony Brook en route to his fourth victory of the season. The junior allowed just two earned runs on seven hits and surrendered only one walk.
The junior and Stratford, Connecticut product had two different stints in Summer 2017 with the Chatham Anglers of the Cape Cod Baseball League. He went 2-0 in his four starts, tossing 19.1 innings and stringing together a 2.79 ERA against some of the nation's top bats.
Call Them The Comeback Kids
In a sweep of Bucknell from March 12-14, Massachusetts was forced to come from behind in each of the three matchups. The last time the Minutemen eliminated consecutive deficits en route to a three-game series sweep was on May 8 and May 9, 2001, when UMass claimed both doubleheader tilts against Saint Joseph's (13-8 and 9-5) before posting an 11-9 triumph to close the weekend.
Not To Be Confused With Brothers Osborne
The Minuteman pitching staff features one set of twin brothers in sophomores Brooks Knapek and Carter Knapek. The duo threw back-to-back in a win over Central Connecticut on Sun., March 11, with Brooks earning the win after four no-hit innings of relief, during which he struck In tout four and surrendered just one walk. Carter then entered for the ninth and collected his first career save. That capped a strong day on the mound for the Minutemen as Justin Lasko started on the hill, striking out five over his four innings of work.
Welcome Back, Coach
A former UMass infielder and captain, head coach Matt Reynolds returns to the Pioneer Valley after three years (2015-17) guiding Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland and seven seasons as an assistant coach at Navy (2008-14).
Prior to Navy, Reynolds served as a graduate assistant under Mike Stone at UMass for three seasons (2005-07). He played his final two collegiate seasons in Amherst after transferring from the University of Maine. He earned Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team honors in 2003 and was named the Minutemen's Most Valuable Player the following year.
