UMass Rally Comes Up Short In 6-4 Loss To Fordham In Title Game
May 12, 2018 | Softball
UMass plated four consecutive runs after falling behind by six runs in the fifth inning.
BRONX, N.Y. – The University of Massachusetts softball team put together a furious rally down the stretch on Saturday, bringing in four straight runs after falling behind 6-0 in an eventual 6-4 loss to Fordham in the Atlantic 10 Championship game. Jena Cozza sparked the UMass (35-14 Overall) run with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning before walking in a run to cut the lead down to two in the sixth.
Fordham (33-21 Overall) plated a pair of runs in the fourth inning to go ahead 4-0 on a leadoff home run and a two-out RBI single after what appeared to be an inning-ending double play extended the frame. The Rams used the long ball in the following inning to go up 6-0 on a two-out grand slam after the Minutewomen put two runners in scoring position in the fourth that were left stranded on three consecutive outs.
Cozza hit her second homer of the tournament and 17th of the season to spark the UMass rally, driving in Riley Gregoire on a two-run shot to left center field.
Melissa Garcia opened up the following frame with a double to left center field prior to a Madison Gimpl single that brought in Garcia from first on a throwing error to cut the Fordham lead down to three runs. Back-to-back walks from Amy Smith and Hannah Bunker loaded up the bases after a Ram pitching change followed by a Cozza two-out intentional walk with the bases loaded to pick up her third RBI of the game while bringing the score to 6-4.
Kiara Oliver retired all seven batters she faced in relief of Meg Colleran, sending Fordham down in order the final two frames as she came in with two-outs in the fifth after the grand slam pushed the lead to six runs.
The Minutewomen had a chance to cut into the lead some more in their final at-bat as Garcia worked a one-out walk before Gimpl picked up her second hit of the game with a double through the left side to put a pair of runners on that were left stranded to end the ballgame.
Cozza, Colleran and Garcia all were named to the A-10 All-Championship team for their efforts during the week.
The Minutewomen put together the most wins for a UMass team on the season since 2012 while becoming the first A-10 team to go unbeaten in the league since the same season while tying the league record for most conference wins in a season.
