Softball Claims First Atlantic 10 Regular-Season Title Since 2012

April 29, 2018 | Softball

The Minutewomen rallied from down three runs to win their 24th conference title in program-history.

BRONX, N.Y. – The University of Massachusetts softball team claimed their first Atlantic 10 Regular-Season Title since the 2012 season as they rallied from down three runs to sweep Fordham with a 5-3 win in game three. The regular-season title marks the 24th in program history for the Minutewomen (31-12 Overall, 19-0 Atlantic 10), who head into the final weekend of league play with a chance to become the first unbeaten team in A-10 play since they did it in 2012.

Fordham (27-20 Overall, 15-4 Atlantic 10) brought in two runs in the bottom of the first inning, bringing one in to score on a wild pitch on an intentional walk attempt before a questionable call at the plate on a force out gave the home team a 2-0 advantage.

UMass settled in defensively to keep the Rams off the board in the next inning after two runners reached safely to open up the second, leaving the bases juiced after a Meg Colleran strikeout and a flyout to right-center field to Erin Stacevicz. Colleran allowed just three hits through the first three innings as she finished the game with four innings pitched to go along with four strikeouts and two earned runs allowed.

The Rams added another run in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with two outs before eventually bringing one across on a walk to go ahead 3-0.

Jena Cozza sparked a five-run top of the fifth inning with her 15th home run of the year, a shot to left center field on the first pitch of the inning. UMass kept it going as Stacevicz beat out the throw to first on a bunt before Carbone reached on a sacrifice bunt while Stacevicz scored all the way from first on a throwing error. Amy Smith came through with a RBI single to shallow center field to tie it up at 1-1.

Hannah Bunker worked a full-count bases-loaded walk to give UMass their first lead of the afternoon prior to a Riley Gregoire sacrifice fly to center field that was deep enough to bring in Madison Gimpl from third to give the Minutewomen a 5-3 advantage.

Kiara Oliver came into the circle in the bottom of the fifth inning to earn her second career save, striking out three while allowing no hits.

UMass will wrap up the regular season next weekend at home against George Mason with game one of the three-game series scheduled for 12 p.m.
