Men’s Lacrosse Scoring Run Secures 14-6 Win Over Hofstra

UMass posts 10 consecutive goals, shuts out Hofstra for 28 straight minutes in Senior Night triumph
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse program defense held Hofstra scoreless for 28 minutes, 49 seconds spanning the first, second and third quarters while the offense scored 10 consecutive times en route to a 14-6 victory during Senior Night on Garber Field.
The Maroon and White wrap up the regular season with a 10-4 overall record and finish 5-0 in CAA play. It is the first undefeated conference run for a CAA team since 2013 (Penn State, 6-0), the second Massachusetts team to earn the feat (2012; 6-0) and the eighth all-time in league history.
Massachusetts is the No. 1 seed and host institution for the upcoming CAA Championship. The Minutemen will learn their Thurs., May 3 semifinal round opposition on Sat., April 27 following the conclusion of the CAA regular season. Though Massachusetts locked up the No. 1 seed and hosting rights with its win at Fairfield on Sat., April 21, all five additional CAA men's lacrosse programs will make or miss the four-team championship based on Friday and Saturday's results.
Five members of the senior class recorded a point during Senior Night, led by Buddy Carr's three goals and one assist. Noah Rak added a pair of assists while the remaining three seniors put in a point apiece on goals by Shane Rinkus and Luc Valenza plus a Jake Lisauskas assist.
Chris Connolly, Jesse Leung, Billy Philpott and Jeff Trainor put in three points apiece. Connolly and Leung each did so on two goals and an assist. Philpott tallied his first collegiate hat trick via three goals on as many shots and Trainor handed out three helpers.
Isaac Paparo had two assists as seven Minutemen put forth multi-point outings. Dan O'Brien scored for the first time as a Minuteman and brothers Ben Spencer and Devin Spencer added a point each on an assist and goal, respectively.
Massachusetts and Hofstra battled back in forth into the later stages of the opening quarter before the Maroon and White settled into nearly 29 minutes of stifling defense, during which the Minutemen held the Pride to only six on-target attempts, all saved by Sean Sconone.
While Sconone collected six of his 14 saves on one end, the Maroon and White sized up 10 consecutive tallies and turned a 3-2 deficit with 3:48 to go in the first into a nine-goal advantage late in the third quarter.
Philpott, a short-stick defensive midfielder, netted all three of his goals during the streak as Massachusetts combined its settled offensive possession with strong transition play. In addition to Philpott's hat trick, O'Brien and Rinkus – longs-stick midfielders – converted during the stretch.
Carr capped the run with back-to-back man-up goals separated only by 14 seconds on the Garber Field scoreboard clock.
A pair of Hofstra slashing penalties at 14:32 of the third quarter – including one locked in for full-time served – put Massachusetts into a two-man advantage, which Carr completed with his 31st tally of the season only 29 seconds later. With one member of the Pride still on bended-knee in the penalty area, Carr connected again at the 13:49 mark for the nine-goal advantage.
Hofstra broke the streak on a Dylan Alderman strike with 4:59 remaining in the third as the Pride connected for three consecutive tallies and brought itself back within 12-6 entering the final frame. However, the Maroon and White defense pitched its second quarter-spanning shutout of the game in the fourth and Leung and Valenza put in a goal apiece en route to the 14-6 triumph.
The game marked 2018 Senior Night and Massachusetts recognized eight members of the program prior to the game: true-seniors Carr, Lisauskas, Jake Marino, Rak, Rinkus and Valenza, and redshirt juniors Mike Elcock and Dom St. Laurent.
