Minutemen earn berth in Saturday’s championship game, bump win streak to 10 games

AMHERST, Mass. The University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse program advanced to its third CAA Championship Game in the last four seasons with a 10-6 victory over the Hofstra Pride at Garber Field on Thursday evening. Junior goalie Sean Sconone backstopped the team to the win with 11 saves while sophomore midfielder Jeff Trainor tallied five points on two goals and three assists.

Massachusetts improved to 11-4 overall with the win while Hofstra finished its season at 6-8. The Minutemen meet Towson (7-7 overall) in the CAA Championship Game on Sat., May 5 on Garber Field. First faceoff is set for 1 p.m. on Lax Sports Network.

In addition to Trainor's five points, Buddy Carr tallied a four-point outing via two goals and as many assists. Jake Lisauskas also scored twice. Jake Marino, Ben Spencer, Devin Spencer and Kevin Tobin added a goal each while Chris Connolly, Charlie O'Brien and Isaac Paparo handed out an assist apiece.

Senior faceoff specialist Noah Rak secured seven groundballs while he won 11 of his 19 faceoffs. Redshirt sophomore short-stick defensive midfielder Billy Philpott had two of the team's six caused turnovers and scooped up three groundballs.

Massachusetts sprung ahead via a three-goal run spanning the first and second quarters, and never trailed the remainder of the way. Carr scored twice in the stream, separated by only 57 seconds on the scoreboard clock, before Lisauskas pushed the advantage to 4-2 with eight minutes, 49 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

Another three-goal run guided the Maroon and White to a 7-3 advantage with 9:50 to go in the third.

Devin Spencer and Ben Spencer capped scoring in the second quarter when the brothers put in goals with 6:47 and 2:35 remaining, respectively.

Jimmy Yanes and Lisauskas traded tallies into the fourth quarter before Dylan Alderman scored twice as the Pride clawed back to within 8-6. However, a transition goal by Marino in the final two minutes followed by Tobin's ninth tally of the year iced the outcome with 20 seconds left.
