No. 7 Northeastern Holds Off Minutemen, 3-2, In Game One Of Hockey East Quarterfinals

March 09, 2018 | Hockey

Freshman Austin Albrecht scored for third straight game, while Brett Boeing added UMass' second tally.

BOSTON – University of Massachusetts hockey fought back from a 2-0 deficit for the third time this postseason, but was unable to overtake No. 7 Northeastern, who edged the Minutemen, 3-2 on a late third period goal in game one of the teams' Hockey East Quarterfinal series at Matthews Arena on Friday night. With the loss, UMass falls to 17-19-2, while the Huskies improve to 22-8-5.

"That was a real good hockey game and I'm very proud of my team, said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "We came out and played the way we wanted to. But we hit a guy in the numbers, took a five-minute penalty and that's the difference in the game. Awesome job by my team coming back. It was unfortunate how they scored their third goal. We were on the power play and had some good bids to take the lead. But I love my team. I love how hard we played. I love that Brett Boeing stepped up. It was a fun hockey game to watch. The fans got their money's worth tonight. It's good playoff hockey and I'm excited for tomorrow night."

After the teams played a scoreless and penalty-free first period, a five-minute major penalty on UMass' Jake Gaudet sent Northeastern to the power play 8:07 into the middle frame, and the Huskies managed to convert twice on the five-minute man advantage. After a period of sustained possession by Northeastern, Jeremy Davies' shot from the point was redirected past Minutemen netminder Ryan Wischow from the slot by Nolan Stevens to give the Huskies a 1-0 advantage.

Northeastern struck once more on the same power play to make it a 2-0 margin. Dylan Sikura one-timed a pass from Davies on the right half-wall that found its way into the back of the Minutemen net at 12:51.

Only six seconds after the conclusion of the major penalty, UMass halved its deficit. Senior Niko Rufo picked up the puck from freshman Philip Lagunov and dished the puck to freshman Austin Albrecht as pair entered the Northeastern zone.Albrecht's wrist shot found its way past Northeastern netminder Cayden Primeau into the top-right corner 13:13 into the period.

The Minutemen were able to even the score at 2-2 early in the third period. Freshman Mario Ferraro's pass from right corner found junior Brett Boeing out in front of the net and Boeing was able to tap home the equalizer at the 2:42 mark. Freshman Mitchell Chafee earned an assist on the play, as well, his 11th of the season.

The Huskies ultimately reclaimed the lead on Sikura's second of the night. Wischow made the initial save, but Sikura's one timer from junior forward Adam Gaudette managed to trickle over the goal line to give Northeastern a 3-2 edge 13:48 into the period.

The teams were even in shots on the night at 31 apiece, while UMass was 0-for-1 on the power play and the Huskies were 2-for-3. Wischow totaled 28 stops for the Minutemen and Primeau made 29 saves for Northeastern.

The teams will return to action for Game 2 of the Hockey East Quarterfinals tomorrow, Saturday, Mar. 10, at Matthews Arena at 7 p.m.
