Quarterfinals Loss To No. 7 Northeastern, 7-2, Ends Season For Hockey

March 10, 2018 | Hockey

The Minutemen finish the 2017-18 campaign +12 wins from 2016-17, the biggest one-year turnaround in program history.

BOSTON – University of Massachusetts hockey saw its 2017-18 season come to an end on Saturday night as the squad fell, 7-2 to No. 7 Northeastern in game two of the teams' Hockey East Quarterfinals best-of-three series. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 17-20-2 overall, a 12-win improvement from 2016-17, marking the biggest one-year turnaround in program history. The Huskies move on to the league semifinals at 23-8-5.

"Very proud of my team," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "I know the score was lopsided, but my kids played hard, they always play hard. Even in the third period, I challenged them to come out and continue to compete, manage the puck, try to score goals and they did a really good job at that. Very excited for the future of the program. We took really big steps forward this year. This was a huge challenge for us. I thought we showed well last night and I thought we could play another game like that tonight, but the scoring chances we gave up were just too high quality."

Northeastern opened the scoring just 3:42 into the first period. Jeremy Davies collected a pass from forward Biagio Lerario and drove to the net for the tally that put the Huskies up 1-0.

Northeastern struck again with 30.2 seconds remaining in the first. After a lengthy scrum in front of the Minutemen net, Lincoln Griffin found the puck behind the goal and wrapped it out to the top of the crease where Nolan Stevens was waiting to tap it home.

Adam Gaudette's one-timer 3:21 into the second period pushed the Huskies' lead to 3-0. Dylan Sikura added another on a breakaway with the teams skating 4-on-4 at the 10:47 mark.

Brandon Hawkins and a Stevens power-play tally completed Northeastern's four-goal second period at 12:37 and 18:56, respectively.

John Leonard put UMass on the board 4:15 into the third period, cleaning up a loose puck amidst a scramble in front from freshman Philip Lagunov and redshirt senior Niko Rufo for his 13th of the season.

Griffin took the goal back for the Huskies at the 8:32 mark before the Minutemen capped the scoring 16:50 into the final frame. Junior Brett Boeing redirected in a Cale Makar shot for his second tally of the weekend, while junior Austin Plevy picked up the secondary helper.

UMass finished the night with a 30-28 shot advantage and went 0-for-2 on the power play, while Northeastern was 1-for-1. Wischow stopped 14 shots for the Minutemen before being relieved by freshman Brad Arvanitis who made seven saves. Cayden Primeau logged 28 saves for the Huskies.
