Melvin Novotny Becomes Latest Roster Addition For Massachusetts Hockey

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey has announced that 6-1, 187-pound left shot forward Melvin Novotny will join the squad's incoming freshman class for 2026-27. The Täby, Sweden, native who was drafted in the seventh round (195th overall) by Buffalo in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, is the third new addition for the Minutemen, joining forward Max Curran and Defenseman Barrett Dexheimer.

"This past season Melvin played for the Muskegon Lumberjacks where he showed to be a consistent impact player," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "He has the ability to make great plays with the puck, while also featuring an ability to score. We look forward to the immediate impact that Melvin will make for our group."

During the 2025-26 regular season with Muskegon in the United States Hockey League (USHL), Novotny logged 57 points on 22 goals and 35 assists in 48 games and was +23. Thus far this postseason he has 12 points (3g, 9a) in 13 games while helping the Lumberjacks reach the Clark Cup Final.

Novotny has represented his native Sweden at the U18, U17 and U16 levels, earning a silver medal at the World Junior A Challenge and bronze at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in 2024-25. He also played for Leksands IF at the J18 and J20 levels and IFK Täby.
