Burnett's Overtime Goal Gives Women's Lax 14-13 Win Over Ohio State

March 11, 2018 | Women's Lacrosse

Kaitlyn Cerasi scores with one second left in regulation to force overtime.

READING, Pa. - Kaitlyn Cerasi scored with one second left in regulation and Hannah Burnett scored the overtime game-winner as the UMass women's lacrosse team rallied back for a 14-13 win over Ohio State on Sunday afternoon at Albright College's Shirk Stadium. The Minutewomen (4-2) trailed for much of the game until a three-goal run tied the game in the final 1:47 of regulation.

Burnett finished the game with four goals and an assist, while Cerasi had three goals and an assist. Holly Turner had a game-high seven points on two goals and five assists. Kiley Anderson (assist) and Stephanie Croke each had two goals, while Cassidy Doster added a goal and an assist. Kasey Keane led the defense with five caused turnovers and four groundballs, while goalie Lauren Hiller made seven saves.

With her seven points, Turner moved into a tie for 5th all-time at UMass for career points. She now has 215 alongside Pam Moryl (1982-85). Her five assists give her 105 for her career which is one shy of third most in program history behind Cari Nickerson (106, 1977-80).

Ohio State (2-4) was led by McKayla Conti who had four goals, while Sara Dickinson (two assists) and Molly Wood each had three. Goalie Jill Rizzo stymied the UMass offense for much of the game with a career-high 23 saves in goal.

The Minutewomen held a commanding 44-to-26 advantage in shots while draw controls were even at 14 each. Defensively, UMass forced 15 of Ohio State's 25 turnovers in the game while the Minutewomen had just 10 miscues. UMass also forced 10 failed clears as the Buckeyes finished the day 12-of-22 in transition compared to 15-of-18 for the Minutewomen.

After trailing 6-3 at halftime and conceding the opening goal of the second half, UMass tallied three consecutive goals thanks to a pair from Anderson and one from Burnett to pull within one, 7-6, with 23:16 to go.

The teams traded goals over the next 14 minutes until the Buckeyes seemed to take back control with back-to-back goals by Wood in less than a minute giving Ohio State a 12-9 lead at the 7:23 mark.

Another three goal run by UMass tie the game at 12-12 with 1:47 left in regulation. Ohio State won the ensuing draw control and converted a free position attempt with 20 seconds remaining to take a 13-12 lead.

Ohio State again won the next draw, but Burnett caused a turnover with eight seconds to go before hitting Cerasi for the game-tying goal with one second left on the clock.

Overtime started with the third consecutive draw win for the Buckeyes, but Keane was there to force a turnover allowing UMass to clear the ball and call timeout. A Doster shot at the 1:41 mark hit the post, but Croke was there to collect the groundball. The Minutewomen held the ball until Turner was able to set-up Burnett for the game-winner.

Up next, UMass will return to action on Saturday, March 17 in Sparks, Maryland, as the Minutewomen take on Cornell at the U.S. Lacrosse Complex's Tierney Field. The game is a re-match of the 2016 NCAA Second Round that saw the Minutewomen win 7-6 placing UMass in the Elite Eight for the first time since 1984.
