SPARKS, Md. - Ida Farinholt scored with 1:56 remaining in the second overtime session as No. 23 Cornell held off the UMass women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon at the U.S. Lacrosse Headquarters' Tierney Field. The game was the second straight overtime contest for the Minutewomen who will return to action Wednesday night at home against Harvard. The opening draw at Garber Field is set for 7 PM and the game will be streamed on the Atlantic 10 Digital Network.
Hannah Burnett led UMass (4-3) with three goals and an assist followed by Kiley Anderson who added a pair of goals and an assist. Holly Turner notched two goals, while Kaitlyn Cerasi, Cassidy Doster and Brinley Anderson each had one. Lauren Hiller made 11 saves in goal including a pair in the two overtime sessions. Kasey Keane led the defense with four caused turnovers and a career-high eight groundballs, while Kiley Anderson led the Minutewomen with seven draw controls.
Taylor Reed matched Burnett's game-high four points with three goals and an assist to lead the Big Red (4-2). Caroline Allen also had three goals, while Joey Coffy had two goals and eight draw controls. Keeper Katie McGahan made 10 saves including two in the overtime periods for the win.
After Cornell went up 6-3 with 9:24 left in the first half, UMass scored four straight to end the stanza taking a 7-6 lead into halftime. The teams traded goals in the second half with Coffy's second of the day tying the game 10-10 with 12:13 to go. Both teams were unable to score over the balance of the second half thanks in part to big saves from each goalie. Hiller made a save on an Allen shot with 2:07 to go before McGahan returned the favor with 37 seconds left in regulation.
The Minutewomen were able to force a turnover on a Cornell clear with 12 seconds remaining to force overtime.
In the first overtime, Turner had a free position attempt with 3:14 to go, but McGahan made the save to keep the score even. Hiller then made a free position save of her own 13 seconds later to keep the Big Red off the board. Olivia Muscella caused a turnover giving the Minutewomen the ball, but a shot by Turner on the ensuing possession went high of cage. Cornell cleared the ball calling timeout with 28 seconds to go, but the UMass defense stood tall to force the second overtime.
UMass won the opening draw control of the second overtime allowing the offense to set-up a shot by Doster, but McGahan again made the strop with 4:47 remaining. Hiller matched the save at the other end of the field on an Allen shot at the 3:46 mark. The Minutewomen earned a free position attempt with 3:17 remaining, but did not get off a shot before period was stopped to change sides of the field and re-draw. Cornell won the draw allowing Reed to find Farinholt for the game-winner.
