Minutewomen and Buckeyes to play at Albright College in Reading, Pa.
AMHERST, Mass. - After a week off from action, the UMass women's lacrosse team head's to Reading, Pennsylvania to take on Ohio State at Albright College's Shirk Stadium. The Minutewomen improved to 3-2 last Saturday following a 12-11 win at Connecticut thanks to a Holly Turner goal with seven seconds left in regulation.
This will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs, though the Buckeyes' head coach Alexis Venechanos is no stranger to UMass. Venechanos served as head coach for the Minutewomen from 2007 to 2010 helping start a championship tradition that still carries on. The Minutewomen won the first two of their Atlantic 10-record nine consecutive league titles under Venechanos' leadership.
UMass enters the game having won two straight games with a mid-week win at Marist before the UConn victory. Turner leads the Minutewomen with 21 points on 13 goals and eight goals. She is followed closely by Hannah Burnett's 18 points on 15 goals and three assists. Kaitlyn Cerasi (16 pts), Kiley Anderson (11 pts) and Stephanie Croke (11 pts) are UMass' other top scorers early this season.
The defense has been anchored by sophomore goalie Lauren Hiller who is averaging just under 10 saves per game with a 0.422 save percentage. Kasey Keane has a team-high 11 caused turnovers, while Kristen LoManto is right behind with nine. Keane also leads the squad in groundballs alongside Croke with 17 each.
Ohio State (2-3) is coming off a 14-13 win at Binghamton on Friday. The Buckeyes also have narrow losses at Jacksonville in overtime and at Cincinnati. McKayla Conti leads OSU with 16 points (12g, 4a), while Liza Hernandez has the team high in goals this season with 13. Jill Rizzo has started each game in cage with similar numbers to Hiller.
Looking at the record book for the Minutewomen, Turner is seven points shy of moving into 5th all-time for career points alongside Pam Moryl (215, 1982-85). `Turner needs five goals to move into the top-10 list for that category. She ranks 4th all-time after collecting her 100th career assist in the UConn game and needs six more to move into a third-place tie with Cari Nickerson (106, 1977-80).
Following the Ohio State game, UMass will return to action on Saturday, March 17 in Sparks, Maryland, as the Minutewomen take on Cornell at the U.S. Lacrosse Complex's Tierney Field. The game is a re-match of the 2016 NCAA Second Round that saw the Minutewomen win 7-6 placing UMass in the Elite Eight for the first time since 1984.
