Early Draw Advantage Leads No. 5 Boston College Past No. 19 Women's Lax

NEWTON, Mass. - An early advantage in the draw circle proved the difference maker as No. 5 Boston College defeated the No. 19 UMass women's lacrosse team 16-9 on Wednesday afternoon at the Newton Lacrosse Complex. The Minutewomen pulled within three in the second half, but the Eagles scored three straight over the last 14 minutes of play to secure the win.
Holly Turner notched five goals in the game to lead all scorers. Hannah Burnett tallied two, while Kiley Anderson and Olivia Muscella each scored one for UMass (1-1). Lauren Hiller took the loss in cage making 11 saves while also forcing three turnovers and collecting seven groundballs.
Boston College (4-0) was led by four goals from Sam Apuzzo and Dempsey Arsenault, while Jordan Lappin added three to highlight the Eagles' offense. Apuzzo also had a game-high eight draw controls.
The Eagles took an 11-5 lead into halftime by virtue of winning 12-of-17 first half draws. After Turner's first goal of the game cut Boston College's lead to 4-3 at the 21:12 mark, the Eagles then scored seven of the next eight goals to go up 11-4 with just under five minutes to go. Turner posted her third goal just three seconds before halftime to give UMass some momentum at the intermission.
The Minutewomen scored the opening three goals of the second half cutting the Eagles lead to 11-8 with 21:19 to go. Boston College scored the next two goals before Burnett scored off a feed from Stephanie Croke with 14:20 remaining.
Boston College, which reached the NCAA National Championship game last Spring, held UMass scoreless over the balance of the game while notching three more goals to secure the win.
For the game, Boston College held a 32-to-22 shot advantage and a 16-to-11 edge in draw controls. Lauren Daly made eight saves for the Eagles in cage.
