Midweek tilt features top-20 showdown between Bay State rivals.
AMHERST, Mass. - It's a top-20 showdown on Wednesday as the No. 19 UMass women's lacrosse team heads to No. 5 Boston College on Wednesday afternoon. The opening draw is set for 3 PM at the Newton Lacrosse Complex in Newton, Mass.Â
The Minutewomen (1-0) are coming off a season-opening 17-13 win over Dartmouth last Saturday afternoon at Garber Field. The Eagles (3-0) have early wins on the season against No. 15 Notre Dame in an ACC contest along with decisive victories over Holy Cross (20-2) and Boston University (18-6).Â
Though the two teams originally began playing in 1981, the series was on an eight-year hiatus between the 1998 and 2016 season. The Eagles are 14-8 all-time against the Minutewomen after having won the most recent meetings in 2016 and 2017.
In Saturday's win over Dartmouth, Hannah Burnett had a strong second half scoring five of her game-high six goals in the stanza. Kiley Anderson tallied four goals and an assist, while Kaitlyn Cerasi notched two herself. Defensively, goalie Lauren Hiller showed her strong play between the pipes as a freshman has carried over into her sophomore campaign. The North Andover, Mass., native made seven saves in the win.
The two squads share several ties this year. UMass assistant coach Zoe Ochoa is one of the top goalies all-time for the Eagles capping her career with a dramatic run as NCAA Championship finalists last Spring. Boston College head coach Acacia Walker-Weinstein was associate head coach for the Minutewomen from 2009-2010. Current junior attack Kiley Anderson began her collegiate career at Boston College in 2015 before transferring to UMass the next season.
The Eagles are led this season by Sam Apuzzo who has 12 goals and eight assists. Dempsey Arsenault (eight goals) and Kaileen Hart (six goals) each have nine points. Lauren Daly has started all three games in goal for Boston College with a 6.78 goals-against-average and a .526 save percentage.
