Burnett scores six; second half surge guides Minutewomen to season-opening win

AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse opened its 2018 campaign at home on Garber Field with a 17-13 victory over Dartmouth College. Hannah Burnett posted a career-high-tying six goals while Kiley Anderson added four with an assist.

In addition to Burnett and Kiley Anderson's efforts, Kaitlyn Cerasi tallied twice while Brinley Anderson, Stephanie Croke, Cassidy Doster, Holly Turner and Abby Walker added one goal apiece.

Croke and Turner posted a pair of assists each for three-point outings. Doster and Bella O'Connor also helped out on a goal apiece.

Elizabeth Mastrio led Dartmouth with six goals, the only Big Green competitor with more than two.

Lauren Hiller earned the win in net with seven saves. On the opposite end of the field, Kiera Vrindten took the loss for Dartmouth. Walker had a quartet of draw controls and caused a pair of turnovers. O'Connor also had two caused turnovers and won a draw control in addition to her assist. Kasey Keane had a team-high four groundballs and caused one turnover.

Massachusetts scored the opening four goals of the game - one each by Brinley Anderson, Burnett, Cerasi and Walker. However, Dartmouth rallied back with steady shooting an the edge in draw controls as the Big Green pulled within 8-7 of the Minutewomen by halftime.

The Maroon and White bounced back in the second half with six of the opening seven goals. Burnett led the charge with three goals in the span, including back-to-back conversions that ballooned a three-goal lead to a 13-8 advantage with 22 minutes, 35 seconds left to play in the game.

After the Minutewomen bumped their advantage as large as seven with 11:50 to go, Dartmouth pulled within four of tying via three consecutive free position goals. Mastrio potted the final two of his six tallies during the stretch, which also included Ellie Carson's second strike of the day.

Faced with 7:42 left on the game clock as Dartmouth's comeback attempt surged, Burnett and the UMass defense quieted the Big Green. Burnett scored her sixth of the day with 4:18 remaining and Massachusetts held Darmouth to just one more on-target shot as the Minutewomen won their season-opener for the fourth time in the last five years.

The Minutewomen return to action next at Boston College on Wed., Feb. 21. First draw is set for 3 p.m.
