Offense Leads Minutewomen To Doubleheader Sweep

The UMass offense racked up 20 hits, finishing with 10 or more for the third straight game.
MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The University of Massachusetts softball team racked up 20 hits in two games on Saturday afternoon on their way to a doubleheader sweep over Ohio and Jacksonville State on day two of the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational. The Minutewomen (4-4 Overall) have tallied 10 or more hits in the last three games on their way to picking up three straight victories. Senior Jena Cozza hit two more home runs on the day to give her four on the weekend as she moved into ninth all-time at UMass in career home runs with 25.

Game One – UMass 7, Ohio 2 - Box Score
Ohio struck first to go ahead 1-0 after an early pitcher's duel in game one before the UMass offense heated up in the fourth inning with four runs to pull ahead 4-1. Kaitlyn Stavinoha opened up the scoring for the Minutewomen in the bottom of the third with one of her two game-one RBIs with a single down the right field line to tie it up at 1-1.

Hannah Bunker and Kaycee Carbone followed with RBI singles of their own as Carbone's came against a two-strike count before an Ohio error put the Minutewomen ahead 4-1. Ohio followed with their second and final run of the game in the fourth inning to pull within two.

Cozza's stellar weekend at the plate continued with a leadoff triple to move into scoring position 60-feet away from the plate. Stavinoha's second RBI of the game drove in Cozza for the fifth UMass run. Cozza went on to hit her third home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth inning to put UMass up 6-2 before an Ohio error allowed Stavinoha to score the seventh and final run.

Kiara Oliver picked up her second win of the season to move to 2-1 in her freshman campaign, finishing the game with a tied for career-high eight strikeouts while allowing five hits and one earned run.

Game Two – UMass 10, Jacksonville State 2 - Box Score
The UMass offense kept rolling into the second game of the doubleheader as the Minutewomen scored three runs in the opening inning. Carbone picked up two of her three RBI on the opening inning with a two-out, two-RBI single to score Cozza and Erin Stacevicz. Madison Gimpl followed with one of her two hits to drive in the third run to put UMass up 3-0. Carbone finished the day 4-of-8 at the plate and four RBI.

Jacksonville State scored their only runs of the evening on back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom of the third to cut the lead down to one before UMass began to break it open in the top half of the sixth.

The Minutewomen threatened with the bases loaded in the fifth, coming up empty before converting on their opportunity with the bases loaded in the following inning with two outs. Bunker drove in a pair of UMass runs with a two-RBI single on a hopper into the outfield to bring the count to 8-2.

Amy Smith picked up her first career hit and home run the seventh, a two-run shot to right center field that scored Riley Gregoire and put UMass up 9-2 before Cozza's fourth home run of the weekend brought the score to a final 10-2.

Quinn Breidenbach picked up the win in relief, tossing four innings of one-hit, shutout softball to go along with four strikeouts.

UMass will wrap up play at the Madeira Beach Invitational tomorrow morning against UMKC at 11:30 a.m.
