Cozza’s Seven RBI Day Leads UMass To Doubleheader Split

Doubleheader Split Senior Jena Cozza tallied seven RBI on the day, hitting two home runs with six RBI in an 11-3 win over Monmouth.
MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Jena Cozza drove in seven runs, including six in the final game of the afternoon as the University of Massachusetts softball team split a pair of contests on day one of the EMU Madeira Beach invitational. The Minutewomen (2-4 Overall) offense came alive in the second game of the day, racking up 11 runs on 10 hits in an 11-3 5-inning win over Monmouth after dropping the opening game of the day to UNC Greensboro, 5-2.
Game One – UNCG 5, UMass 2 - Box Score
The Minutewomen offense came out and put two runs on the board in the first two innings before cooling off down the stretch as UNC Greensboro (1-0 Overall) rallied with a five-run fourth inning to defeat UMass 5-2.
Kaitlyn Stavinoha drove in the first run of the day for UMass with two outs in the top half of the first, sending a RBI triple into the gap to score Jena Cozza all the way from first to go ahead 1-0.
UMass manufactured their second and final run of the morning in the following inning after a Melissa Garcia walk and a Madison Gimpl sacrifice bunt put a runner in scoring position with one out. Alyssa Lyon picked up her second RBI of the season in the following at-bat, sending a double to left field to plate Garcia and put the Minutewomen ahead 2-0.
The Spartans scored all the runs they would need in the bottom half of the fifth inning after a pair of walks and a single loaded the bases with no outs before a sacrifice fly to center field brought in the first UNCG run of the day. A pinch-hitting Jordan Gontram hit a one-out grand slam over the wall in left center to bring the score to a final 5-2.
Kiara Oliver bounced back in the circle after surrendering five runs in the fourth, striking out the next four UNC Greensboro batters she saw as she tied her career-high for strikeouts in a game with eight in 6.0 innings pitched.
Game Two – Umass 11, Monmouth 3 (5 innings) - Box Score
Cozza paced the UMass offense in the second game of the day, going 3-of-4 at the plate with three runs scored, six RBI and two home runs in the 11-3 5-inning win over Monmouth (0-1 Overall). The senior opened up the game with a leadoff home run to right center field in the bottom half of the first inning.
The offense continued to roll in the second inning, racking up seven runs on four hits and an error to bring the score to 8-2 after Monmouth added a single run in each of the first two frames. A bases-clearing double down the left field line for Cozza opened up the scoring in the inning before a Kaitlyn Stavinoha single and a pair of walks lead to a Melissa Garcia RBI on a walked in run to put the Minutewomen ahead 7-2.
Cozza's second home run of the contest came with no outs in the third inning, a two-RBI shot over the wall in center field to bring in Jackie Kelley and give UMass a 10-3 advantage. The game-securing run came in the bottom half of the fifth on a Garcia single through the left side to bring in Erin Stacevicz.
Kaycee Carbone added the seventh and final run in the frame with a RBI single up the middle to bring in Hannah Bunker from third.
UMass continues play at the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational tomorrow with a doubleheader, beginning with a matchup against Ohio at 1 p.m. before taking on Jacksonville State at 4 p.m.
