Softball Comes Up Short To UT Arlington, 4-1

February 10, 2018 | Softball

Alyssa Lyon led the UMass offense with a 2-of-3 showing at the plate in game three of the Tiger Classic.

BATON ROUGE, La.  The University of Massachusetts softball team strung together three of their four hits in the fifth and sixth innings but came up short in a 4-1 loss to UT Arlington on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Park. Alyssa Lyon led the way for the UMass (1-2 Overall) offense in the contest with two hits on three plate appearances while driving in the lone run in the fifth.

UT Arlington (2-1 Overall) stuck first in the opening inning after a walk and two straight singles loaded the bases with no outs. Kaycee Carbone kept a run off the board out in left field on a fly ball, tossing out Sandra Mendoza at home for the first and second outs of the inning. The Mavs ending up loading the bases again, scoring a run on a hit-by-pitch to go ahead 1-0 early.

Kiara Oliver replaced Quinn Breidenbach in the circle with two outs in the first inning, getting UMass out of an early jam with a bases-loaded strikeout to end the frame. Oliver retired the first seven batters she faced in relief, finishing with four strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched while allowing one earned run.

UT Arlington added a run in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth to go ahead 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth. The Mavs capitalized on six walks to score four runs with just five hits in the game.

Madison Gimpl opened up the fifth inning with an extra base hit on a double down the right field line to move into scoring position before Caroline Videtto came in to pinch run with one out. Lyon picked up her first collegiate RBI the following at-bat on one of her two hits in the contest, sending a hard-hit ball through the right side to plate Videtto from second base and bring the score to 4-1.

UMass looked to add to their scoring total in the bottom half of the sixth after Hannah Bunker reached on an infield single while Jena Cozza got a free pass on a hit-by-pitch to put two runners on with no outs. Both runners were left on base to end the inning after three straight outs halted the rally.

The Minutewomen will return to the diamond tomorrow morning to take on Syracuse at 10 a.m. ET as tonight's scheduled game between UMass and No. 8-ranked LSU was canceled due to weather conditions.
