Season-High Three Road Goals Sends UMass Past GW In Regular-Season Finale
October 31, 2018 | Men's Soccer
Yosuke Hanya, DeAndrae Brown and Davis Smith all scored for the Minutemen in the win.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team scored a season-high three road goals as they closed out the regular season with a 3-1 win over George Washington on Wednesday afternoon. The Minutemen (7-8-2 Overall, 3-5-0 Atlantic 10) remain in the hunt for the eighth and final spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament depending on a handful of results from tonight's upcoming league matchups.
UMass built an 8-3 shot advantage over the Colonials (5-9-3 Overall, 1-5-2 Atlantic 10) in the first 45 minutes while putting three attempts on target, including an early goal scoring opportunity off the head of Brandon Merklin that was saved by an extended Thor Arne Hofs for GW.
Marvyn Dorchin picked up a pair of saves on three attempts on goal from GW, including a save in the 28th-minute off a Colonial header that came via a long throw in. Dorchin also came up with a save five minutes into the second half, jumping to his right to deflect a GW shot away from goal to preserve the one goal lead.
UMass quickly countered the other way after Dorchin's first save, earning a free kick from about 28-yards away that led to Yosuke Hanya's first career goal in the 29th-minute into the top of the net just under the crossbar off a Merklin assist. The third assist of the season for Merklin gave the senior a career-high for assists in a season after dishing out two in both his sophomore and junior campaigns.
The Minutemen added their second goal of the day as they put home two goals in a minute span, beginning with a free kick from 18.5-yards out after Hanya got by a GW defender and was fouled just outside of the 18-yard box. Hanya picked up his first of two assists on the game moments later as DeAndrae Brown put in his team-leading ninth goal in 59th-minute.
Davis Smith followed with a goal of his own shortly after, finding the back of the net off assists from Clement Benhaddouche and Yosuke Hanya for his fifth goal of year in the 60th-minute to extend the UMass advantage to 3-0.
George Washington scored their lone goal in the 71st-minute by way of a Haukur Hilmarsson free kick goal from 30-yards away to cut the UMass advantage back down to two goals. GW nearly got their second goal seven minutes later on an open net before Merklin positioned himself in front of the shot at the near post to clear away a would be Colonial goal.
UMass awaits its postseason fate this evening as five more Atlantic 10 games will begin at 7 p.m. with tournament implications on the line.
