Men’s Soccer Falls On Penalty Kicks In A-10 Quarterfinals To VCU
November 04, 2018 | Men's Soccer
Clement Benhaddouche scored the lone UMass goal of the day to tie it up early in the second half.
RICHMOND, Va. – Clement Benhaddouche scored his first career goal early in the second half to tie things up at 1-1 on Sunday afternoon at SportsBackers Stadium as the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team fell in penalty kicks 5-4 to No. 1-seeded VCU in the Atlantic 10 Championship quarterfinals. The Minutemen finished the season with a 7-8-3 overall record as they qualified for their fourth straight Atlantic 10 Tournament for the first time since 1999-2002.
Eli Cronin nearly gave UMass an early tally in the fourth minute with the lone shot on target for the Minutemen in the first half, heading a shot attempt across goal to the far post that was saved off a Marvyn Dorchin free kick from the midfield.
Dorchin was quickly back in action in goal down on the defensive end as VCU earned a penalty kick in the fifth minute after a Minuteman foul near the six-yard box. The sophomore keeper denied VCU's Siad Haji's penalty attempt, diving to his right to push the shot away from the post and back into play where UMass cleared it away. VCU went on to score the opening goal 13 minutes later, scoring on a Jared Greene putback after Dorchin came up with one of his four saves in the half on a powerful shot attempt from the other side of the pitch.
Benhaddouche hit the crossbar on a bending free kick from 24-yards out in the 22nd-minute for the second and final UMass shot attempt in the first as VCU eventually earned a foul in the box stop the Minuteman attack.
The senior followed with the equalizer eight minutes into the second half, finding the top right corner of goal off the dish from Davis Smith for his first career goal in the 53rd-minute to knot it up at 1-1. The UMass offense dominated possession for the majority of the second half, attempting nine shots in the second half while putting four on goal as VCU shot just seven times with one on goal that was kick saved away by Dorchin in the 58th-minute.
After 20 total minutes of scoreless play in the overtime periods, the game went to penalty kicks to decide who would advance to the semifinals. Dorchin came up with a save on VCU's fifth attempt after UMass had one blocked earlier in the sequence to send it to extra penalty kicks at four each before Mario Sequeira saved the sixth UMass attempt.
